Gold plated walls shimmered ever so slightly in the soft light that filled the room. Flames flickered as wax dripped slowly into sconces on each wall. A faint beam of sunshine filtered into the house through the window near the door. Ankha let out a faint huff as she shoved the heavy coffin lid back into place, a resounding thud coming as it settled. She reached her paws up to adjust her headdress, making sure the serpent still rested on the center of her forehead. The gold infront of her showed her a slightly warped version of her reflection. She made a small noise of satisfaction once assuring her headdress was on straight.

The door creaked open slightly and I poked my head inside. "Ankha, are you here?" I'd seen her outside only a few minutes ago, but after trying to find her again figured she'd returned home.

That constant frown settled over Anhka's face in an instant. "What do you want?" She questioned, her tone unpleasant.

I slipped inside and made sure the door was firmly shut behind me. "I wanted to bring you a gift!" I dug through my backpack until I found her gift, pulling out bright red cherries. Hope filled my eyes as I held them out to her, rocking back and forth on my heels slightly.

Ankha stared at the cherries for a minute, before gently taking them from me and setting them on the coffin she was standing next to. "At least someone appreciates my gloriousness," She stated. Her dry tone made it hard for me to tell if she was being serious or joking.

The glint of light reflecting from the scales next to me caught my attention. I turned so that I was standing in front of them. "What are these?" I asked, reaching out to touch them.

A paw swiped out at me, causing me to recoil. "Don't touch those." Ankha narrowed her eyes slightly. "Those are for weighing souls. On one side belongs a feather, the other a heart. Do you honestly not know anything?"

Blood drained from my face and sweat built up on my forehead. "Are you serious?" My voice quivered slightly in fear.

Anhka looked at me then returned to the other side. "No, don't be ridiculous. They're for portioning by weight. It's not my job to weigh souls, or to entertain bored people. I'm busy. Do you think it's easy looking this good? I put a lot of effort into looking beautiful."

I had already tuned out and was instead wandering around, looking for anything else of interest in her house. The pyramid was strange, but the gold toilet was almost stranger. After a moment of exploring I turned my attention back to ankha. "Why do you wear a snake on your head?"

Anhka seemed to fluff up ever so slightly in pride. "The cobra is a symbol of kingship. In some cases, her highness, the king." Ankha looked away from me and lifted her chin slightly.

I blinked at her for a few seconds before pulling together a response. "That's cool! I didn't know that. I'm guessing there's a reason blue and lapis lazuli are a part of your outfit as well."

"Of course there is," Anhka stated in a matter of fact tone. "They are for good luck. I wouldn't want anything happening to me. There's so many fascinating bugs and I don't want to be bitten. Bug bites would ruin my appearance." If it was possible her frown became more pronounced.

"Well, I think that it looks good on you. It brings out your eyes," I commented, navigating my way back towards the door. There was a long list of things I needed to get done and I didn't want to stay up too late trying to get everything done.

Ankha seemed to freeze for a moment before suddenly speaking up. "Wait. You can always ask me questions about myself. I'll answer them."

I smiled brightly. "Okay! I'll keep that in mind." I pushed the door open and skipped outside into the warm spring air.

The bright sun shone down on me, making my already happy mood cheerier. I darted around the island with a smile as I got to work on completing my tasks for the day, quickly losing track of time.

As night settled across the island, crickets began to chirp and bushes rustled as I krept through the greenery, a new spider locked in my sights. The moonlight and glowing stars high above lit my path. The furry little arachnid had no idea I was there. This was the perfect opportunity to expand the collection in the museum. I slowly lifted my bug net, crouching slightly.

In a flash I slammed my net down over the spider, only to be startled by a small shriek. Luckily the spider was still trapped in my net. I looked up to see Ankha shaking like a leaf. "Ah, Ankha!"

Ankha snapped out of it and glared at me. "Don't do that! Don't you know you should watch where you are going?!" She berated, putting her paws on her hips.

I let out a nervous laugh. "Sorry Ankha, I wasn't looking." I slipped a jar out of my bag and carefully guided the spider into it.

"Well you better watch next time! My soul nearly left for the afterlife. Hmpf." She looked away from me and turned up her nose. After a moment I caught her glancing at me as I put a lid on the jar. "What are you doing with that spider?"

I held up my jar to show off what I had caught. "I caught a new spider for the museum! Isn't it cute? Look at it's fuzzy little legs."

Ankha seemed to ease slightly, lowering her hands and watching the spider scitter up and down the sides of the jar. "Well, I wouldn't exactly say it's cuteā€¦"

My shoulders slumped slightly. "Ah, I see. Wait-." I paused for a moment as a thought crossed my mind. "You aren't scared of spiders, are you?" I asked, shifting with curiosity.

I swear I could see Ankha bristle, even in the low light. "No! Why would I be scared of spiders? Only children are afraid of spiders." She glanced away slightly. "Plus, I actually happen to find spiders quite fascinating."

The spider attached a web to the jar lid and slowly slid down till it was suspended upside down. "How old are you?" I wondered. I'd never really thought to ask that to anyone before but Ankha mentioning children brought the question to my mind.

"I almost three thousand years old, but don't you dare call me a dusty old hairball! You're still talking to her highness," Ankha hissed, her frown once again being somehow more pronounced than usual.

"Wow. That's incredible. You look so young and beautiful. How are you so old? Do you have any family?" I probably shouldn't have asked those questions but they just fell out without me even thinking too much about them.

Ankha seemed to deflate slightly. "I am the eldest of ten children. I haven't seen any of them in a long time. Egypt changed, I found myself preferring island life. All I know is how old I am has something to do with Ankh, the heiroglyph for life and my namesake. What, is there something wrong with me for being so old?"

A knot formed in my gut and I felt really guilty for asking any of the questions. "No, no, that's fine! Being old is cool. It means you're really wise." I panicked for a moment, trying to figure out how to back out of this situation. "Uh, anyways, I should probably put this guy somewhere he'll be safe until the museum opens tomorrow." I ducked my head down and started hurrying back towards my home.

Suddenly I was stopped as a paw grabbed my wrist. I looked back to see Ankha staring at me. I opened my mouth to ask what she was doing but she beat me to it.

"Tomorrow, come by my house when you are free." Ankha let go of my wrist then walked off, her head up.

What had just happened? I shook my head slightly. Thinking too much about it was going to give me a headache. But I couldn't stop thinking about it, even as the sun rose, bringing about a new day. I hurried around the island, taking care of my tasks until I found myself in front of Ankha's house.

The purple door seemed foreboding as I stared out of it. I let out a sigh and pushed it open. "An-"

"There you are!" Ankha huffed and grabbed my hand, pulling me inside. "Sit here. I'm just about to start doing my makeup."

I pulled myself up and sat on the coffin where she told me to. I watched as she washed her face and started applying makeup. That was a lot of eyeliner. I glanced around. Was everything shinier than it was last time I was here?

Apparently Ankha had been saying something but I hadn't been listening until the end. "-And then he said that it was K.K. Slider."

"What?" I stared at her blinking. I had no idea why she was talking about K.K. Slider or what any of this was about.

"Right! The audacity he has to say such things," Ankha lifted the pencil from her eye lid for a second to wave it dramatically before returning to what she was doing. "But I'm honestly not surprised. I heard he sleep walks. It could be hallucinations from being mostly asleep."

I tried to form words for a couple of minutes, but I had no idea how to respond to that when I didn't actually have the context. "Oh, well. I'm sure it doesn't really matter."

"Of course it matters! What if he starts spreading lies about me? I simply can't have that," Ankha declared, finishing up the wing on one of her eyes. She inspected it for a moment then nodded slightly.

"No one would want lies spread about them," I pointed out, "But I can't imagine why anyone would want to lie about you. For one you're very pretty, especially with your eyes.

Ankha briefly glanced at me. "Thank you. It is nice to have someone appreciating my beauty. I am perfection." She lifted her chin slightly as she rubbed the eye liner pencil into her skin. "There. All finished."

I clapped my hands. "They look beautiful. But, why don't you add gold eyeshadow or something?"

"Simple. Not all that glitters is gold and I don't need anymore gold to look fabulous. I think I look stunning just like this." Ankha put a paw against her dress dramatically.

I couldn't help but giggle a little, though I tried to hide it as a fake cough. "You do look amazing just the way you were." Ankha was right. She didn't need anything else gold. She already had so much of it.

Ankha paused for a moment then nodded. "Thank you. There, now we are friends and now you have to help me with my makeup. I can also share all the best gossip with you."

I smiled, willing to at least be physically present for that. "I can't wait to see where this friendship goes."
