Life Excerpt

It was a beautiful summer’s day. He could feel the heat from the sun on the back of his neck as he was bending over the plants in front of him. Sixten was tending to the vegetables in his home garden, and enjoying every minute of it. He smiled to himself. He was helping to save the environment and getting a free tan while doing it. Not a bad deal.
The buzzing on his right intensified a little as one of the bees flew by him. He looked over at the hives. That was next on his list. Checking on the bees, and on how the honey production was coming along. Sixten knew that he’d be spending the next couple of hours tending to all of the different things in the garden. Other than the vegetable plots and bees there was also the fruit trees, the insect hotels and the big water collector to check on. And he should probably see to it that the compost was tended to as well. He’d been blowing that off for the past few days because of rain. But it really needed to be done, if they were ever to get more dirt out of it.

It had taken him almost three hours to finish everything in the garden, and he was finally heading inside. As he opened the front door he was greeted with mouth watering aromas from the kitchen area. He smiled as he followed the enticing scents and saw his boyfriend, Knox, working on preserving different vegetables from their garden, in different ways. Sixten knew that Knox would be doing his best to make sure that there was as little waste as possible. He would have done the same. That was one of those things that had drawn them together. Their common interest and passion for preserving the environment and making sure that they lived off of the land as much as possible. Sixten looked at his love and waited for him to slow down a bit before approaching him from behind. Then he put his arms around Knox’s waist and embraced him lovingly. He could feel Knox relax and lean back slightly, knowing full well that Sixten wasn’t about to let him fall.
   ”Mm, everything smells delicious. Including you.” Sixten gently kissed Knox on the neck.
   ”Thank you. Hopefully it tastes as good as it smells.”
   ”I know it will.”
