Life Excerpt
The battle was in full swing all around him. He didn’t really have time to pay much attention to everything that was happening, but from what he could tell the Spartans were winning. Alexios grinned. Once again he was leading his fellow Spartans to a glorious victory.
He noticed an Athenian hoplite running towards him with his weapon and shield raised. Alexios’ grin grew wider as he thought that this was going to be fun. Yet another lamb for the slaughter. He started running towards the soldier, on an intercept course, and as they were barely two meters away from each other Alexios leapt into the air with his sword and broken spear raised above his head, ready to strike. As he descended he drove those weapons into the shoulders of the shocked hoplite. With the hoplite now on his back on the ground Alexios pulled his weapons out, making sure that he did enough damage to the soldier to kill him outright. Spartans and Athenians might be enemies but that didn’t mean that the soldiers of the opposite side had to suffer needlessly.
As he turned his back to the dead soldier he noticed an Athenian captain a short distance away from him. Alexios knew more than well what a hit it would be to the morale for the opposing side to lose a leader like that. Making his way to the captain he made sure to help in any fight happening in his path. Swinging his sword with deadly precision he helped dispatch soldier after soldier while still keeping an eye on his prize. As he approached from behind the captain changed his stance, widening it in order to easier take the incoming hits to his shield from the Spartans he was busy fighting. Making a split second decision Alexios started a short sprint that he then turned into a ground slide that sent him straight between the legs of the captain. He had his weapons out so that when he passed the legs he automatically sliced them with both weapons. It took the captain by surprise but he soon recovered, albeit moving at a somewhat slower speed than before. Alexios swiftly got to his feet and faced the Athenian, ready to take him down fully. This was going to be trickier than the hoplite though. The captain was much bigger and with better armor. The almost duel-like fight started and Alexios found himself having to avoid a lot of heavy attacks, but the captain was also very quick at times. This fight was starting to tire Alexios out. A sudden screech filled the air and Alexios grinned once again.
”Now you decide to join the fray, eh Ikaros?” The captain couldn’t really focus on Alexios anymore as he was being accosted by an eagle that kept attacking his head with claws and beak. Taking advantage of the situation Alexios managed to circumvent the shield that had caused so much trouble before and drove the blade of his broken spear into the gut of the captain. As he was pulling it out again the captain was losing his balance and the momentum of Alexios’ pull made the big Athenian fall forward. Being as exhausted as he was by then Alexios’ reflexes were dulled and he ended up pinned between the captain’s heavy body and the muddy ground. He was trying to push the corpse off of himself when he heard the Spartans changing their shouts from battle cries to shouts of triumph. Turning his head to the side he could see the remaining Athenians running off, trying to get away from the place of their defeat as quickly as possible. As he turned his attention back to the corpse on top of him and started to push at it again he heard some laughter and then the captain’s body was dragged off of him. The Spartan commander walked over to him with a smile on his face, barely hiding the fact that he’d been the one laughing mere moments ago.
”Misthios, there you are!” The commander looked at the corpse. “Or were you enjoying yourself with this Athenian corpse?” He then extended a hand to Alexios, offering him help to get up from the mud. Help Alexios accepted. Gladly. He was more than happy to get out of the position he’d been in. The commander looked at him with a raised eyebrow. “Are you bleeding?” At first he was surprised at the question because he had no recollection of anyone dealing any blows to him that hadn’t just hit his armor. But as he looked down he could see that he had a long gash on his right side, just between his belt and chest armor.
”Hm, didn’t even know anyone got a hit in.” The commander laughed again and patted Alexios on his shoulder.
”You really are a true Spartan, aren’t you? Shrugging battle wounds off like they’re nothing!” Alexios looked at the commander with a confident smile.
”Born and raised!” The commander nodded in approval.
”Well then, let’s see to that reward of yours, shall we? You definitely helped us turn the tide here in Korinthia today.” The commander started heading back to the staging area and to his tent. Alexios followed promptly behind him.
”Happy to help Sparta keep hold of as many areas as I can.”
”Glad to hear it, Eagle-Bearer. And it’s always a boon to have an accomplished misthios such as yourself fighting by our side.” As they reached the tent the commander went inside as Alexios waited outside. Moments later he came back out with a pouch of drachmae that he handed to Alexios and nodded to him as another thank you. Taking the pouch Alexios turned around and started heading out of the camp, when he was reminded of the injury he’d sustained as he felt a sharp pain in his side. Looking around he found something to sit on and then proceeded to quickly bandage the area. He knew that where he was headed next he’d be well taken care of and the wound would be seen to in a more permanent manner. Satisfied that the bandage would keep him from bleeding too much he got up and headed over to where the horses were being kept.
”Ah, Phobos! Time to head to more familiar grounds, my old friend.” After getting up on Phobos he patted his companion on the neck. “It will be good to get back to Kechries again. To see Lykinos and...” He smiled. “...and Timotheos.” Just saying the name made him feel good inside.
”Why can’t you just try to be more careful?” Timotheos was kneeling in front of a sitting Alexios, tending to his wound, and scolding him at the same time. Alexios laughed, which made him wince slightly in pain.
”How much more careful can I be when this was done by a guy that was already dead?” Timotheos shook his head.
”That sounds like the exact opposite of being careful to me, if you’re letting even the dead take a swing at you. And letting them hit you!” Fastening the bandage Timotheos leaned back in order to look at his handiwork. Being satisfied with how it looked he nodded in approval. Then he looked up at Alexios, this time with concern on his face. “I worry about you. You know this. Every time you leave this town. I...I worry that it’ll be the last time that I...that I’ll see you.” He let out a sad heavy sigh as he dropped his gaze to the floor. A hand touched his chin ever so lightly and lifted his head to look up at the wounded misthios. Alexios smiled at him.
”I know you do. And I wish there was something I could do, or say, that would ease your mind...”
”There is. You could tell me that you’ll stop travelling all over the Greek world!” Alexios gave him a sad smile as he moved from sitting on the chair to kneeling in front of the man he loved. They were now very close. Their faces were mere centimeters apart. Alexios lovingly put his hand on Timotheos’ cheek.
”You know my stance on that.” Timotheos nodded.
”That you’re not ready to retire yet...”
”But tell you what. I promise to stay here for the entire recovery period. I won’t head out until this wound is completely healed.” Timotheos looked at him and smiled.
”I do appreciate that. I really do, Alexios.” His smile grew wider as he added. “But we both know that you’re going to get restless, just staying in one place for any longer period of time.” Now it was Alexios’ time to smile. He leaned closer and whispered in Timotheos’ ear.
”But this is different, isn’t it? I usually don’t have the luxury of staying in the same place as my lover...”
