The sunset painted the sky in shades of orange and red and bright violet, and as they sat beneath the gnarled branches of their favorite tree, Kade cleared his throat.
"It's nice, isn't it?" he said, quietly, almost a whisper, "To get away from things for a second and watch the sun set. Not from a window or a video on the internet. To just be out here with all these colors..." a small smile tugged at the corners of his lips and he moved his hand gently to rest on hers. "I feel like we just don't do this enough. What do you think?"
There was a pause, but the silence was not uncomfortable. Kade stared at the sky, watching as the colors shifted and began to disappear.
"It is nice." she said, as she pulled her hand slowly away from his. "But... Kade..."
He knew immediately what was about to happen. There wasn't really any lead-up, no signs he had noticed, nothing to prepare him- but he knew. He risked a glance at her and, in the last crimson seconds of the sunset he saw a tear roll down her cheek. She stood, looking away almost bashfully, almost embarrassed that she may have been caught crying. Everything froze, for just a moment.
Painted in the darkness of fresh night, she said, "Kade, I don't love you anymore."
And then, she was gone.
