From the deepest, blackest hollows of the underworld comes Zadira — neither male nor female, but something far older and far less comprehensible. A shadow forged from hunger, logic, and ancient magic, Zadira exists by borrowing vessels — human bodies willingly surrendered through contracts that are rarely fully understood by those who sign them.

For centuries now, Zadira has worn the flesh of Dr. Donovan, a charming and capable veterinarian whose calm demeanour conceals the darkness threaded through every movement. They share the body, in a way. Donovan lives, but it is Zadira who watches, speaks, acts — when needed. Human minds are delicate things, and over time, even willing ones fray beneath the weight of a force like Zadira. The soul flickers. The body weakens. Every contract is, eventually, a slow unravelling.

But not all bonds require terms.

Long ago, Zadira encountered Soleil — a being of warmth, luminous and terrible in her own right. She was not summoned. She was not bargained for. She simply was, and is. Soleil is the light to Zadira’s endless dark, the flame that neither burns nor blinds. No paper-bound agreement ties them together. They are connected by something far deeper, far more permanent. Where Zadira walks in shadow, Soleil softens the edge. Where Soleil shines, Zadira lingers just behind.

They belong to each other. Not because they must. Because they always have.

The Demon

Name: Zadira
Origin: Romanian, meaning: Bully
Alias: Dr. Donovan (vessel)
Gender: Genderless
Age: Ageless (appears mid-30s in vessel form)
Species: Demon (Ancient Underworld Entity)
Appearance: A constantly shifting silhouette with no fixed edges — void-dark, no more than a shadow with glimpses of internal fire like dying stars. Their presence distorts the air, and sound bends around them. Their eyes, when visible, appear as pinpoints of pale gold in the black.

The Vessel

Name: Donovan Alexander
Known As: Dr. Donovan, Doctor, Doc
Gender: Male
Age: 36
Appearance: The doctor is a striking, dark-haired man with intense green eyes and an unnervingly calm demeanour. Most describe him as well-groomed, charismatic, and eloquent - but there's a coldness to his gaze that feels... other.

To the outside world, Dr. Donovan is a calm, soft-spoken man with an almost unnerving sense of composure. There's something about him — an unshakeable steadiness — that makes people trust him without knowing why. He listens more than he speaks, and when he does speak, his words are measured, kind, and often surprisingly insightful. Patients describe him as deeply empathetic, with a quiet warmth that seems to reach even the most anxious of animals and their owners.

He has the manner of someone who carries heavy things in silence — grief, perhaps, or long-buried thoughts — but never lets them leak into his work. There’s a hint of melancholy in his eyes, as though he's always a few steps removed from the world around him, but it only adds to his mystique. People often say they feel seen by him, understood in ways they can’t explain.

And yet, there’s always something slightly... off. A fleeting chill in the air when he enters a room. A sense that he’s watching more than he lets on. That perhaps he knows something you don’t, and chooses — mercifully — not to say it.

To those who know him best, he’s kind, dependable, and loyal, but there’s an edge they can’t quite name. A shadow behind his eyes that surfaces in rare moments of distraction — when he stares too long, when he smiles just a second too late, or when he’s perfectly still in a way no human ever is.

His clinic reflects much of the same contradiction. Wedged between a half-collapsed pawn shop and a boarded-up liquor store, the exterior is unremarkable. Inside, however, it’s clean, orderly, and well-stocked — a professional space tucked into the city’s most neglected corner. Donovan chose the location himself, insisting on serving where others wouldn’t. Guard dogs, exotic animals, and their often unsavoury handlers drift in at all hours for quiet, discreet treatment. No paperwork. No questions.

Animals seem to calm instantly under his care. He speaks to them in low, soothing tones — gentle, almost fatherly — and even the most vicious creatures still beneath his hands. As for human visitors, word has spread: he’ll patch you up, no judgment, and if you need something beyond medical aid, he might offer that too. Shelter. A favour. A way out.

People know something isn’t quite right; they feel it in the silence between his words, in the shadows that never seem to fall quite naturally around him. But in a place like this, help is rare and kindness rarer still. And so, they turn a blind eye — to the cold, to the stillness, to the sense that something older looks out through his eyes — and leave quietly, grateful to still be breathing.

Abilities

Possession (via contract): Zadira cannot enter a human body by force — they require explicit consent, signed through a metaphysical contract. These contracts vary in form: whispered agreements, written pacts, or symbolic gestures made under emotional duress. Once a contract is sealed, Zadira becomes a permanent resident within the host’s body, sharing space with the original soul. They never fully take over unless the host invites it, but they nudge, influence, and gently overwrite until the line between self and shadow begins to blur.

Enhanced Perception: Their eyes, when not concealed, reflect more than the physical. Zadira perceives the layers beneath surface reality — deception, enchantments, even intent. Lies taste like spoiled wine; illusions shimmer like thin oil over water. This doesn’t make them omniscient, but it’s extraordinarily difficult to fool or mislead them through mundane or magical means.

Influence Over the Emotions of Their Vessel:While Zadira does not control Donovan like a puppet, they can push or dampen his emotional responses — heighten his fear to make him alert, numb his sorrow to keep him functioning, or soften his empathy to make darker choices palatable. This emotional influence is subtle, almost imperceptible unless Donovan resists, and it strengthens the longer the possession lasts.

Immortality Through Host Succession: Zadira is bound to the mortal plane through vessels. When one body fails — be it from age, injury, or collapse — they must secure a new host via contract before the soul-anchoring thread breaks entirely. If no vessel is claimed in time, they are dragged back to the underworld, dormant and formless until summoned again. Each new vessel renews their connection to the world, making them effectively immortal as long as they continue finding willing hosts.

Aura of Dread or Awe: Their presence shifts depending on their emotional state and intent. When calm or curious, they emit a quiet, reverent awe — people may find them captivating, charismatic, strangely magnetic. When angered or provoked, that same aura curdles into dread: time seems to stretch, air grows thick, and instincts scream danger. This aura is not always intentional but can be weaponized deliberately when persuasion fails.

Limitations

Bound by the Terms of Each Contract: While Zadira is powerful, their influence on the mortal plane is governed by the specifics of every contract they forge. If the contract stipulates limits — such as time shared, actions prohibited, or moments of control — they are compelled to obey. Breaking these terms can lead to being forcibly ejected from the host or even trapped in liminal space between planes. This binding ensures that no matter how manipulative they are, consent and agreement remain the foundation of their power. A cleverly worded contract can cage them as easily as it frees them.

Cannot Possess Without Willing Consent: Zadira cannot invade a body uninvited. Their presence requires a voluntary agreement, even if it’s made under desperation, ignorance, or illusion. They may twist truths or dangle tempting offers — power, survival, knowledge — but they must wait for the human to say 'yes' in some form. This is a law etched into the marrow of the universe, older than angels or demons: consent cannot be forged or faked. Even the faintest hint of rejection renders the soul untouchable.

Vulnerable to Celestial or Holy Influence: Though not inherently evil, Zadira’s origin in the underworld leaves them vulnerable to divine or celestial forces. Sacred spaces may weaken their presence, while artifacts — crosses, relics, even Blessed Holy Water — can cause them pain or disrupt their hold on a vessel. Direct exposure to divine magic can force them into dormancy or sever their link to the host entirely.

Vessel Degradation Over Time: Human bodies are not designed to host ancient forces. Though Zadira shares space with Donovan rather than fully possessing him, centuries of spiritual pressure take a toll. Physical symptoms may begin as fatigue, memory lapses, or subtle changes in behavior — but over decades, the vessel’s health wanes, and the soul grows thin. Some hosts shatter from within, consumed by the strain. Others beg for release. Zadira walks a tightrope, always aware that overuse may render the vessel useless… or irreparably broken.

Soleil

A radiant being of light whom Zadira considers their equal and opposite. There is no contract between them, only eternal connection. She is the only presence that can still surprise them.
