TO LOVE AND BE LOVED IN RETURN.
The letter shakes and billows in the wind as he overlooks it; its lettering is hard to make out, but he knows his beloved will still be able to read it. Why not? His beloved has read countless other notes he's sent. They just haven't replied to one yet. That's why he's here now, to talk to them about it. To hell with the flimsy paper barrier between them. He's going to meet with them today. and it's going to go well, despite what the little whispers of anxiety try to tell him.
He's tired of their constant insistence. Of each and every little doubt he makes of himself, or of others, or of beloved. Fears of them not being faithful to him, despite his wholehearted devotion and every little moment he's given to them, body and soul and whatever else have he to give to others. But they did it anyway. Faith was broken, and faith was replaced with anguish and the faintest slivers of hatred. He won't let that stand in his way. He's far too good at keeping up with his beloved.
He's done it so often that it's second nature to him.
Watching from afar, keeping up with them in the subtlest of ways he could manage. But not subtle enough, he guesses, because they saw. They saw him getting in his own vehicle after following them out to the parking lot. He wasn't going to do anything—as if he could hurt his beloved in the first place—but they mistook him for something he isn't. What they saw was a monster in the shadows of the night. Something between a very real criminal and a creature bent on destroying them in one way or another.
Then came the barrier. The paper barrier. What could it do, really, to keep him away from his one true love? From his fairy-tale ending? He's smart enough to know that the prince always gets his mark. All he has to do is keep trying. And that's what he's doing; he's going to make them fall in love with him. Like the princesses in love stories and they're going to live happily-ever-after in one way or another. He's going to make sure of it.
The only thing he needs to do . . . is knock.
WHY DOES MY HEART GO ON BEATING?
Growing up without much of a parental figure there to give him the care and attention he so wanted, Caradoc turned to . . . unorthodox methods of getting that out of others. When those methods led to him becoming something he wasn't anymore, just for a few promised sweet moments of adoration from his beloved, he took the offer up without hesitation. And then, again, he took it.
And then, again.
This cycle continued. It twisted him, bent him out of shape, and ripped him apart from the inside out. Now, his beloved can't stand to look at him. No matter how much he's returned to the source of his promised endless love. And how he hates her for the deception of it working forever.
Only one thing is certain to him anymore: he'll try again if it kills him.
