dam this flood by holding tough.
They're stuck in quite a tight spot. Sure, taking on more jobs seems obvious enough of an answer, but that's harder than it seems what with the sudden lack of protection necessary in the day-to-day lives of their usual employers. They should be glad that no one is getting hurt, at the very least. Yet here they sit, browsing over help-wanted sections for jobs that won't pay enough to get rid of this debt of their within their lifetime. Something more low-profile to just keep them on their feet for a few days more.
They're starting to regret blacklisting him. The eldest son of a high-profile company with enough to let them live comfortably if they had . . . no. He got far too comfortable around them, then started to follow them, then . . . .
Why had they blacklisted him? He was cordial until he started following them around outside of work. And if they ever felt unsafe, truly unsafe, they had the experience of protecting other people to protect themself. They would have been fine. If only he had just said something, then they could have turned him down. Turned hm in another direction. Maybe they would still have a decent job then.
Whatever. The past is the past. And they need to focus on the present now.
They toss the paper to the side, and glance behind them at the horrible, grim once-face they said was an old prop. They swore not to go back to it. But it's there, now. It's glaring back, taunting them with the income they got out of it. The buyer never got this one, and there's always demands for things like this. Perhaps it'd be better to just . . . fall back into the habit.
They shake their head, grimacing at the memories. They're better off ignoring it and trying to think positively. That always kept their mind off of the bad things. Off of the past. Everything will turn out to be fine. It always does. It always has. Even when Mom almost got them kicked out.
They really should call her more. She's probably thinking about them right now. She'll probably bring up a shiver she got when they do.
But first things first, they need to answer the door.
nobody has to know.
Times hit hard for everyone, Iolite can tell anyone that; they grew up learning to keep a bright and cheery demeanor from their mother. Even when money was tight, she made room and time for her only child. And money was always tight, it seemed. At the offer of enough to keep them afloat and even comfortable, they fell in with a bad crowd. They have a souvenir from those days—though it's questionable if they consider the emotional turmoil they face now a souvenir, too.
Their mother owns her home now, but if they could go back and stop it all from happening, they would.
The past is the past, though. They can't change it. But they can keep it a secret. And, trust them, it's far better than the alternative and getting anyone else involved. It would just be a whole mess if they let that happen. But their excuses are wearing thin, and with their best client being out of the question, money is tight again.
They might need to go back to their . . . nasty little habit. And fairly soon, at that.
