Summer was coming to an end. School was starting soon and Florian had yet to decide what college he and his snake familiar, Basil, would be attending. Thus the young Eladrin’s journey to tour a number of campuses arose. Excitingly this would be his first opportunity to stretch his legs outside the swamplands he called home.

Directions however had never been Florian’s strong suit. He had a tendency to wander, and his ability to get distracted by literally anything was one of his superpowers. At least, that’s what his haunted floppy hat told him. Auntie Ellenor had gifted him the fussy hat to be both a travel companion and voice of reason on his journey. Sad to say, it had little influence over the boy when something really caught his eye.

So it came as no surprise to the hat that after touring the last designated college campus, Florian took a wrong turn on their way home. That had been a week ago. Either Florian hadn’t noticed (he never listened to what the hat had to say anyway) or he was too shy to ask for directions. Being shy was not a usual characteristic of the boy, but, like the rest of his family, his traits seemed to shift with the seasons.

After walking for what felt like ages, dusty and road weary, the boy, his hat, and his ghostly snake familiar made their way to a fishing village and into an inn for a much needed meal. For some reason, the barkeep seemed less than thrilled to accept Florian's handful of shiny rocks and obscure coins as adequate payment. But, as luck would have it, a very friendly minotaur lady named Eva offered to cover his tab.

Florian joined Eva at a table also occupied by Salu, a very large man in a very fancy sweater; Ash, a regular sized shirtless dude who smelled drunk; Mitts, an overly enthusiastic cat guy; and a nameless person completely covered head to toe in black, including their face. This entourage reminded Florian very much of the campus he had just visited. It made perfect sense that this was just another college town, and surely his family wouldn’t be upset he was lingering around here.

The rag-tag group shared how they were all new to town in one way or another, and they had agreed to help some guy with a fetch quest the next day in exchange for rooms at the inn. Florian, having completed very few group assignments, thought it would be beneficial to join them to better learn the nuance of teamwork. At least, that was what he told himself in the beginning. But one thing led to another, and before he knew it Florian found himself, his hat, and his new friends on a ship sailing toward parts unknown. Inadvertently, touring college campuses had ignited a wanderlust in him. If his family thought to ask, Florian would tell them it had indeed been the “learning experience” they expected it to be.

Truth was Florian just wanted to go on an adventure. This group seemed cordial enough. Hell, even the moody guy in all black joined them. Auntie Ellenor would understand- at least, that’s what Florian told himself. It had been a couple weeks since their last communication. Just a few more surely wouldn’t do any harm...
