Lou Sullivan was an author and activist, known for helping forge the distinction between gender identity and sexual orientation. He was also known for being the first transgender man to publicly identify as gay, and he fought tirelessly for queer trans people to have the right to transition (which they were banned from at the time). His activism was vital for the growth of openly-identifying trans men in the 1980s and he helped pave the way for the rights of trans people.
He was denied sex reassignment surgery many times on the basis of self-identifying as a gay man. He was finally approved in 1979 by doctors and therapists that were willing to accept his sexuality along with his gender, even though the DSM specified queer sexuality as a contradiction to gender dysphoria in the diagnostic criteria.
He was later diagnosed with HIV, and is thought to be the first case of a trans man developing AIDS. He wrote, "I took a certain pleasure in informing the gender clinic that even though their program told me I could not live as a Gay man, it looks like I'm going to die like one."
He passed away in 1991, at the age of 39, due to complications from AIDS.
