I will not die.

Not here. Not today. And, most definitely, not by him--the bane of my existence, the human that captured me so many years ago. I don't remember much from when I was a hatchling. My only memories are of him and this small cage that brought me nothing but pain and misery.

So, I sit here in my gilded cage, waiting patiently. The cage is magically protected by the human that dares call himself my master--a name that I will never give him. Only he can open the cage. He has been gone a long time, but I am not worried. No. He will return for me, as always. Perhaps he believes whatever item he has found this time will actually be enough to kill me.

Or, he believes starvation is the way to go this time.

He's never tried that, and I'm more surprised that he hasn't thought of trying it long ago. If that is his goal, then perhaps death is my only option? After all, I cannot open the cage myself and he has been gone for a long time. Longer than usual.

NO.

I will not die. I have to remind myself of the only truth I know. I will not die by him. I will never give him that satisfaction. I glance around the room now that the idea of his desertion lingers in the back of my mind.

Ah, the fool left the window open. I'm not sure where the human's house is, since he's never kept me close enough to the window to see outside; but humans live by other humans, no?

Without further thought, I started to sing. I've never sang before, not wanting a harsher punishment from that vile human, so it took me a moment to get into the groove. I don't know where the song came from, but it felt as if I was pulling it from a memory long forgotten. A song from my ancestors.

The song felt like an unfamiliar warmth in my chest. A deep longing and sadness crept into my voice, and I'm not sure why. I couldn't help myself. I lost something important and I can never get it back. But what did I lose? It feels important, but I can't think of what it could be. Regardless, the song was freeing and uplifting, even my breaking heart can feel it. The song made the cage seem insignificant and brittle, even though I know the opposite is true.

The sound of a door creaking open had me stop immediately. My head shot towards the front door, prepared for that human's fury. Instead of the usual disgusting human I was used to, a smaller sized human stood in the door way. I tilted my head. This was the human I had called for? I shook my head before letting out a chirp to get the human's attention. The human's head turned in my direction. I could see the human had piercing blue eyes that looked surprised to see me. Or perhaps it was greed for the golden cage in those icy depths. It's too early to tell the truth behind this human's heart. This tiny, little human will be my escape either way. I chirped again, impatient by this human's hesitation to step into the house.

I will not die here. Especially not at his hands. He will never get that satisfaction.

Never.

I chirped louder this time, making the little human jump. Even though I only have experience with one human, I could tell that this one is much different than the last. Perhaps this was a small human woman?

She carefully walked into the house, no doubt expecting a trap or someone to catch her trespassing. I wish I could tell her to hurry up for there was no trouble waiting in the shadows. There was no telling when he would be back, and I don't want to think of what he would do to her.

I held my breath as she stopped in front of my cage, staring so intently into my eyes. Slowly, she reached a finger through the bars. It didn't take me long to realize she wanted to touch me. I don't want to be touched by a human. But this was my chance at escaping this hell. I closed my eyes tightly and tilted my head so she could touch the top of it. I'd do anything if it meant leaving here.

Her touch was so gentle and light that it felt as if the wind was caressing my feathers. I opened my eyes to look at her curiously. There was a faint smile on her lips, and I was almost tempted to brush my head harder against her finger. Almost. I chirped and moved away from her. We didn't have the time to waste.

"I don't know why someone would abandon such a pretty bird here," the human said in a hushed voice. She glanced around. "Well, it doesn't seem as if they're still here." She sighed before looking back at me. "I'll probably get in trouble for getting another bird, but honestly! How can I leave anything to just die in some stinky, old abandoned house?"

I nearly fell off my perch when the human grabbed the cage off of the stand. The movement was so quick that I wasn't able to prepare myself. My heart was filling with both excitement and fear as she quickly ran out of the house with my cage held tightly in her arms.

For the first time, I took a deep breath of the outside world. It smelled of a sharp and clean fragrance with an underlaying dampness that was the exact opposite of the musty, stale air of the house. I was absolutely thrilled. This. This is what I was longing for--the smell of freedom. I can only hope this small human doesn't betray me.
