Eight oiled animals found Wednesday.
June 23rd, 2010.
Three oiled mallards, a northern gannet, a bottlenose dolphin, two sea turtles, and a benthoctopus were found washed up along the beach Wednesday, according to Fish and Wildlife officials.
The birds were alive, despite initial reports that two were dead.
The two oiled sea turtles and octopus were found in Florida waters Wednesday. They were transferred to a a rescue facility in Panama City.
Once the baby dolphin was discovered, a three-hour ordeal ensued to try and save it in the water. Two U.S. Coast Guard volunteers and a Florida Department of Environmental Protection officer were involved in the rescue attempt.
The Coast Guard said the dolphin was crying as people rushed to save it. Locals gathered and scraped oil off the animal with their bare hands, despite the fact that coming into contact with the tar can cause skin irritation and burning.
''It was heartbreaking. Everyone was crying. We had oil all over us.''
The dolphin died while enroute to Gulf World Marine Park.
''It was so sad. It just broke our hearts''
The dolphins struggle to survive added to the dismay of people stunned to find a mass of oil washing ashore and covering the pristine coastline.
''Its terrible. It's just awful,'' said a local beach resident, who was among the people gathered to help the dolphin. ''You can't t even get close to the water. It's just oil coming in. It's dangerous.''
The animals death comes nearly a week after BP establishment a $20 billion relief fund for those affected by the spill.
''BP doesn't get it. It's not about the money. This is sacred ground to us. We got married on these shores. We baptized our children in this ocean. We entrust the ashes of our loved ones in this ocean. It's so much more than they know.''
Since the beginning of the BP spill, 61 oiled birds have been recovered in Florida. Of those, 46 were found dead.
In addition to the birds, 83 bottlenose dolphins. 44 of them babies, have died so far. Before the BP oil spill, the average number of dolphins deaths per-year was two.

Based on the true story of the 2010 oil spill. As of June 7th, 2013, dead animals mixed with tar are still washing up along the coast.
It's easy for those who don't live along the coast to forget the oil spill. It's much harder for those who have to see the dead animals, smell the tar, and pay the medical bills from prolong exposure. It may have happened three years ago, but even today, the coast is still suffering the consequences.
