Werewolves

A werewolf is a human who turns into a a fearsome "near-wolf" due to a full moon. Werewolves are much like real wolves, however, pupils of the eyes, snout shape, and tufted tails are tell-tale signs of a werewolf, and not a normal wolf. Before the full moon, werewolves appear as normal human beings, and always appear to be ill when a full moon is approaching. This condition is caused by infection with lycanthropy, usually occurring when a human is bitten by a transformed werewolf. Unfortunately there is no known cure to lycanthropy, but the effects seem to be lessened only by the Wolfsbane Potion.

Lycanthropy

Lycanthrophy is spread via infected saliva to blood, therefore a bite from a werewolf results in a 100% chance of becoming infected, and suffering the unfortunate effects of a werewolf for the rest of their lives. However, if a werewolf in human form bites another human being the human will only suffer "wolf-like" tendencies. For example, a craving for very raw meat.

Transformed State

While a human is in their werewolf state they lose the ability to recognize anybody they know and impose an immediate threat to any human around them, either by infecting them, or killing them. However, if a human was in their animagusÂ¹ they are not under threat to be transformed into a werewolf as the infection is only known to harm humans.

Infected humans transform into their werewolf state once a month on the full moon. The process is said to be extremely painful, and if their is nothing around for the werewolf to attack, it will attack itself, often leaving scars on the human after transformation.
