I recommend you listen to the song he will be playing as you read!
So what kind of person would be willing to dedicate the hours required? He, the current owner that is, picked up the case by its brass handle. The young man would briefly eyeball himself in the mirror. He checked to make sure that every thread was in its place, that his blonde hair was neatly slicked back. An older white-haired man, his attire would indicate his status as a butler, would come into his room with only a single knock to pull his glance away from the mirror. “Your carriage has arrived. Please let me take your things.” He would say with a hoarse voice and reached out to take the case which was in his master’s hand.
“Make sure that case remains on the seat next to mine.” The master swiftly commanded. His servant, having handled the precious instrument many times before, would not have to verbally respond to acknowledge his request. A quiet nod will do before he exited the room. The master found his royal blue eyes wandering back to the mirror once again, but he would soon discover he wasn’t alone. A dark figure loomed behind him with rose red eyes eerily staring back at him through the mirror. Anyone else would have exclaimed “Devil!” after having their bones jump out of their skin, but the young man had become rather accustomed to the creature’s presence. “Master Peri Jackson, what do you wish to play tonight?” It would ask, the words flowing off the tongue like butter.
Peri Jackson, as the young man was known, confidently answered “Concerto BWV 1041 in A Minor. Parts I through III. Bach.” The three part sonata had been meticulously practiced over and over again for the last week and a half nearly nonstop. If the room wasn’t padded, surely the servants venturing around would question if their job was worth the repeated, but error-less practice. “I’m safe to assume you’ll be joining me, Faust?” In a split second the large and black figure would shrink. A billow of black smoke would fade to reveal a muscular canine, Doberman-like, with his ears propped upwards with a never ending look of alertness. The red eyes intently peered upwards at him as they both took steps towards the carriage which was located outside on the stone steps.
The violin owner and player would soon find himself standing on an aged hardwood stage in front of hundreds, if not a thousand admirers. A quick look upwards revealed a dome ceiling enhanced by artwork which must have taken months to accomplish. Other than the stage floor he stood on, not a single other piece of wood would be without texture or an intricate pattern lovingly carved into it. Thick curtains hung over his head with the red cascading down each side of the stage to enhance his place in the spotlight. No wonder people came to concertos, the music hall itself could transfer a soul into an unknown world.
He glanced out to see that the masses would mingle with those whom they were familiar. Conversation would cease as soon as the Stradivarius was delicately placed to the left on the thick of his neck. His right hand bringing the bow to string.
The melody began vibrantly intense, yet felt inviting to his audience. The notes were passed with quick pace. The sonata was certainly uplifting, but also serene. Men and women below could see his fingers moving up and down the stem with concentrated passion. A strange, yet familiar feeling began to furl in his stomach only a couple minutes into his performance. It was in that moment, Peri knew he could close his eyes because it was not his talents and hard work guiding his hands to play. While the audience were becoming captivated, he was being captured. His soul felt frozen in his own body.
The tones of the second portion would be appropriately more mysterious than the first. Slow and regal, the rhythm matched his heartbeat. Peri would peek to see the men and women below with only a second’s look of melancholy for he knew what the sweet notes would do to them. Like a sin, his music would leave a scorched mark on their soul. One that could not be absolved through a priest for they did not even know it would be there. Peri knew that some of the people before him could perish tomorrow suddenly by heart attack, in a month’s time perhaps a victim of murder or two, or years later where tragedy will eventually strike. When time came, Peri knew that none of the people before him would reach the golden gates.
Only fair, since he hadn’t either. Fatefully interrupted in his passing, the life and body he lived through before was slowly fading away day by day. Peri awoke in acceptance of a new body and a new life. In gratitude and repayment for the chance to continue on Peri would find himself here, on stage, fulfilling that repayment. The last and final portion of the concerto returned the mood to exciting and joyous. People eyed him, despite the final piece sounding so grand, they were pulled towards a more bittersweet feeling knowing that their time in the music hall would soon come to an end.
At the end, they would all stand and applaud. Polite and without boisterous cheering, the audience soon threw single florals on stage. The masses would begin to disperse after a short while and Peri would feel as though he was finally in control of his body again. The only person not entirely ecstatic to have spent their evening in music the hall was him. Only he would leave with the burden and guilt of what he had just done.
Peri sealed the violin in its sacred case once again and snuck out the back of the building before anyone could pull him aside. His mind set on returning home without interruption.
