Story:
In the Temple of Bast, silence reigned. The joyous, frenzied shouts of her celebrating people still rang in her ears, but now the temple was deserted and Bastet had her privacy once more. Her bare feet making no noise on the cool alabaster floor, the young goddess retreated into the palace her followers had built for her. It was beautiful, cool and white, but this afternoon, it felt like a lovely prison- a stone case holding her to the earth.
The ceremonies always took a lot out of her. The waving, the brandishing of sacrificial knives, the heroic posing, endless and routine. It made Bastet's immortality feel like an unwelcome house guest, a ghostly certainty hanging in every twilit room of her pale cold home.So this is eternity.
Reaching behind her neck, the goddess undid the clasp holding the heavy, gleaming gold torc around her throat. Waving away the servants, she let the necklace fall to the floor, the soft metal ringing against the stone in the quiet of the temple. The broad bangles on her slender arms went next, crashing to the floor in an opulent cacophony. Lapis encrusted protective charms fell from her arms. Glittering jeweled scarab beetles tumbled from her hair. Bastet left it all in a glittering wake behind her as she swept into her private chambers and shut the door firmly behind her.
Her white ceremonial gown crumpled to the floor. The remainder of her jewelry rained down with soft rich metallic noises, and she walked unadorned and pure to her private balcony.
The Lioness stepped into the dry desert air. Above her the sun blazed into the blue infinity of the sky, burning himself deep into her retina and shrinking her pupils to tiny slits of jet. Still she stared upward, unblinking, intent. "Ra," she breathed, her lips dry and barely moving. "I miss you. Eternity is empty without you. Come back to me soon."
