Opallyn: name meaning like an opal.
Opal (n.) A cloudy gemstone derived from the mineral quartz, opacity ranges from opaque to semi-translucent with irregular veins reflected small beams of light. Can be a range of colors in its natural form including white, pinks, blues, greys, and even in rarer instances green or red. Most commonly recognized form is a milky, white and blue nugget.
Personality:
Opallyn, is most often described as whimsical, lofty, alighting on a moments passion, as well as being very charming. Although Opallyn can be very alluring, she is also extremely flighty, often seen hidden behind a book whenever she feels frightened or alone. Her natural inclination is that of a butterfly who never fully realizes her charm, and therefore when upset can be overcome with gloomy storms of emotion.
Can be rather timid and opaque when it comes to her past.
History:
Opallyn sat on the edge of a large mussel laden rock where waves gently crashed, their ebb and flow leaving behind traces of pebbles, sea glass and distant memories. Beside her sat an old metal jewelry box coppery with rust, inside were the only remnants of her past life. An old crumpled newspaper, it's pages yellowed and crinkly from tear stains, a locket encrusted with pearls, a stack of envelops smelling of saltwater and a skeleton key. In her hand she holds a photograph of a couple with a small child running across the sand, it's edges yellowed and worn with age. Mundane as they may appear, these were treasures in the mind of their owner, a reminder of what had once been, and would never be. Starring out into the deep blue ocean, for a moment it seemed only yesterday when she was an innocent girl of six wandering the seashore with her parents. Often in her dreams, she relives that moment when she first learned her parents were leaving. In tender bursts it comes to her, the salty taste of ocean air, the luminescence of the tide pools. Around her neck is an ornate brass locket, decorated with a single pearl. She recalls vividly how her parents normally strict health nuts allowed her to order a huge ice cream cone. Peels of laughter echoed off the looming cliffs surrounding the seashore as a small girl danced in the crashing waves. Her parents looking on, smiling from a distance. For a moment it feels like time stilled, frozen in a photograph. And then with a burst of salt-water and a crackle of thunder, the dream ends.
She remembers watching the fields of barns, and cows pass by in the distance. Raindrops splattering the windows as the car moves, taking her away from the security she once knew. Counting cars she sees the faces of happy children and tries to imagine ho wonderful their lives must be, families unbroken by cruel reality. A single tear falls from her eye and cascades down her cheek, and she hugs her ragged brown teddy bear trying to act brave.
Her parents sent her away to live with an Aunt and Uncle, due to ensuing panic in their native country. For several years Opallyn received a brief series of letters from her parents, but since the notes have stopped coming. Her parents' whereabouts currently remain unknown, and it is assumed they are dead, possibly killed by their government.
