On the day I was born, I saw big blue eyes twinkling down at me. They were framed by a kind face that had lots of laugh lines and character. He had me cuddled into his hands when I first opened my eyes, and I felt so safe and comfortable."Hello little one" he said, "I wondered if I could have this happen in real life, and this morning I wake up, and here you are."
I wasn't sure what he meant by "real life" but I wiggled a little to let him know I heard and his smile grew into a grin.
Over time, I learned he was what was known as a famous person. He would hide me in his pocket and take me to movie premieres, and award shows. On set he would leave me in his trailer while he went to film scenes. When at a TV show for an interview I'd stay in a pocket of his outdoor coat. Recording or performing stand up, again in the outside coat. I didn't mind, I could snooze anywhere. I only felt energetic when he was near me. As if he had my battery inside him.
Sometimes he would sneak in to check I was ok. But only if no one else was around. I never saw the other people I could hear him have conversations with. But that was ok, because most people wouldn't understand us little blubs. They don't know how many of us hide in plain sight. That we're only friends with extremely special people.
He shared so much with me. His highlights, what funny little events had happened during his day. The people whose faces had lit up to see him and would make him feel special in turn. But sometimes, he would share the deep darkness that haunted him. The bone deep sorrow and inability to see that happiness again. Those were the times I tried my hardest with sparks, stretches, and wiggles to make him smile again. Sometimes it even worked.
One day, it didn't work any more.His name was Robin Williams. I still miss him. I always will.
