Shepherd was born to an Alaskan husky. She was a stray who gave birth to her pups in an abandoned construction site, then found and taken to an animal shelter with her pups. Shepherd was one of the first to be adopted because of his unique eye color. Shepherd's owner was a nice young lady, who loved and cared for him.
One day, she didn't come home. Shepherd waited for hours. Finally, a different person entered Shepherd's house. Unfortunately, his new owner was ignorant and left him outside in backyard. Shepherd never saw him except when he came to refill his dish. Fortunately Shepherd figured out he could jump the fence, so he was not completely deprived of socialization. Eventually his owner put in a much higher privacy fence, and Shepherd was unable to escape.
After days of sitting by himself, he began to despair. As the feeling of loneliness increased, he felt an intense need to let it out. Standing, he pointed his muzzle to the stars, took in a deep breath, parted his jaws, and let out a long, lonely, heartfelt howl. His howl bellowed through him and into the night. He stared into the night sky.
Suddenly he heard rustling on the other side of the fence. His fur bristled and a low growl entered his throat.
"Who's there?" Shepherd called out into the darkness.
A light, nonthreatening voice rang out. "Why do you sound so sad?"
Shepherd said nothing, but lowered his head. The voice spoke again. "Why don't you come out of there?"
Shepherd squinted in the direction of the voice. “Who are you?â€
“I’m called Howler by my human.â€
Shepherd pricked his ears. “You have a human?â€
“Yup.â€
“Your human lets you wander around out there?†Shepherd’s eyes were wide with interest.
Howler chuckled. “Well, my human wanders out here with me. He’s asleep now.â€
Shepherd tilted his head. “How is that so?â€
“Nevermind that. Now come on out of there.â€
"I can't."
Howler sneezed. "Of course you can."
Shepherd stepped forward. "How?"
"Just....leap!"
Shepherd took a few steps back and bolted towards the fence. He made a flying leap and hit the fence, his claws digging in as he slid down the wall of boards.
"I can't!" Shepherd barked.
"Well, okay then. See you around. I guess you'll just die behind that fence." Howler left.
Shepherd stared at the fence. After a few tries and one giant leap, his front paws touched the top of the fence. His back legs scrambled to get upwards. He tried as hard as he could to pull himself up by his front legs.
Suddenly, a shadow jumped up on the fence on the other side, grabbed Shepherd by the collar, and launched him all the way over the fence. Shepherd landed with a thud. He looked up. Towering over him was a big brown dog. The dog resembled a wolf in build except for his huge, curly tail and one floppy ear.
Shepherd stood up, trying to appear strong. Howler grinned, his tongue lolling out. "Let's go, friend. Say, what’s your name anyway?"
Shepherd stared wide-eyed at the big brown dog’s shimmering gold eyes.“S-shepherd...â€
“Heh,†Howler wagged his big bushy tail. “Wanna see the best place in the whole city?â€
Before Shepherd could answer Howler was already trotting away.
“Alright,†The shepherd mix said with a pang of uncertainty. Both dogs ran off into the dawn.
