The wind was blowing harder now. Myzuko looked to the sky and listened to what the wind had to say. No, it couldn't be true. His tribe was not selfish. He listened to the wind with concentration, tried to understand the message. The spirits of water were angry. As the wind whispered those last words everything on the island became still. The wind was there no more. His stomach knotted up as he walked back to the village. He needed to prepare a ritual. He needed to find out more before something terrible happened. The urgency never felt so great. Why would the spirits of water be angry with them?
Myzuko gathered the materials he needed for the ritual. He was the tribe's only Witch Doctor which also made him the only one who could communicate to the spirits of the different elements. That meant it was his duty to protect the tribe. As he lit the remaining candles the wind returned. The force knocked him to the ground. Everything he set up was now scattered throughout the trees around him. As he looked up towards the ocean he realized he may be too late.
The waves were violently crashing into the beach slowly making it's way closer to the village. In the distance he could see the water swirling and rising up towards the sky. Wind was now screaming at him. The water spirits were sending Tsunami. But why? What have they done to anger them? He had to protect the village. He had to finish the ritual. He started chanting, tried to concentrate on the words, tried to call out to the water spirits to speak to him. He wasn't getting an answer. Just then the wind knocked him over again, screaming even louder. That's when he realized wind had been speaking to him all along. He listened hard and as water started to fall from the sky around him he knew.
The water spirits felt his tribe had been taking too much from them and not giving enough in return. He should have known. He should have seen the signs. The lack of fish to be caught, the constant rain. He thought nothing of it. He failed to protect his tribe. He fell to his knees and started to plead, promising to do whatever it took to appease the water spirits. He opened his eyes to find Tsunami inches from his face. Wind was still screaming at him but he heard another voice. Water was gushing around him. Tsunami was speaking. If he wanted to save his tribe and appease the water spirits he must sacrifice himself. He didn't need to think about it. He knew the answer. Before he could whisper the word Tsunami engulfed him.
Myzuko opened his eyes. He was in the ocean deep underwater. He started to swim as fast as he could to the surface when he heard a faint whisper. You belong to us now. At that moment he realized he had changed. He was a Hydrus now and his purpose was clear. He would serve the water spirits for eternity. He slowly made his way to the surface and looked toward the island. It looked as if nothing had happened. His tribe was safe, for now. He would have to do whatever it took to keep them safe while he served the water spirits. He watched the sun set before returning to the depths below, a flicker of hope in his mind that he would someday return to the surface, to his people. The water whispered around him. Never.
