Strawberries.
That's what I miss the most. The strawberries.
They used to grow all over the field every summer, and we would eat our fill for weeks until we were sick of them. But then we'd all start wanting them again once the next summer came. Oh, you should have seen my brother in our berry-eating contests! Haha ha!
But... they don't grow around here anymore. A lot of them were dug up when they built the highway over there, and then they built the shopping mall where the stream used to be, so once the pond got too gross to drink from, then the rest of them died out too. Pretty soon, nearly everything was dead. Even the grass doesn't look right here.
I think I'm the only one left now. I haven't seen anybody else for a long time. At first I didn't like staying here all alone, but since I didn't leave or die with the others, I wasn't sure where to go. After a while I figured out that I could still live here... sort of. The cars on the highway sometimes throw out bags with bits of food inside, and there's this concrete... thing over that way where water puddles gather when it rains. I tried the puddles with rainbows in them once, but I was surprised that they taste so gross when they look so delicious. It wasn't the same life as I had before, and I felt like I started to get more tummy aches, but it kept me here. I had lived here all of my life, and I just didn't want to leave.
Soon, I started trying to make things better. I gathered up as much trash as I could and put it in a nice little pile by that new fence there. I even made a little house out of the trash pile last winter. Look! I used a tire I found for the front door! Isn't it cute? Still, it seems like every day there's even more trash than the last, but I feel like trying to clean the meadow is kinda my job now. I just want to do something to help. Anything. Even if it's making me sick, and I don't have any of the energy I used to have because I run around catching styrofoam cups all day. I'm the only one around to do anything, so I have to keep going as long as I can.
Oh... my name? Uh... I never had one. I suppose you could call me Strawberries, since I'm kinda like them, you know. I'm here for a while, doing what I always do, and then someday... I'll be gone. I just hope that someone will miss me too.
