From the moment Kelly laid eyes on him she knew, by instinct, that he was one for her. As he wriggled and squirmed past the others, his deep chocolate brown eyes never left hers.
"Him." she said to her dad standing behind her. "He's the one I want." she dropped to her knees in the soft hay and held her hand out tentatively. "Come here boy." she said to the puppy still struggling to get free from his brothers and sisters.
"That one?" her dad asked her, the disbelief evident in his voice. "But...but he's the runt of the litter!" he said in protest.
"Daaaaaaad." Kelly said, "you told me, any pup I wanted, and this is the one I want!" looking back to the pen she saw that he had given up trying to fight for her attention and slunk back to the other side of the pen. He looked over his shoulder after putting his paws up on the edge as if to say, "well, I'm waiting for you."
Kelly broke into a grin and pointed it out to her father who snorted in response. She got to her feet and bolted around the pen to the side before picking the lone pup up.
"Hey there tiny fella." she whispered to him as she cuddled him against her chest. "Tiny, I do believe you and I are going to be great friends."
