| Name:Marinus Companion:Borealis Owner:Fairytales Adopted: May 30, 2011, previous owner unknown Overlay by:Tomorrow there lived a young unicorn who loved the sea.He would leave his mother's side to play in the surf and race the waves along the shore. It was a peaceful time for the herd, in an age when unicorns roamed the earth as horses do today. They were beautiful creatures; kind-hearted, innocent, and pure. When the power of man began to rise, the unicorns approached him in friendship — but their trust was misplaced. Man coveted the unicorns' beautiful horns; the sources of their magic. At first, he resorted to bribery, offering riches and treasures. When the unicorns refused, he grew angry. In a fit of rage, he captured the most trusting unicorn, who had dared step closest to his camp. He bound her with rope and broke off her pearly horn. The unicorn's magic seeped into the air and transformed the poor mare into a mortal horse. The other unicorns fled, running until they hit the moon-bathed coast. Man followed, riding their anguished companion. He desired to capture whole herd this way {for remember, in this time, horses did not exist.} So there they stood, cornered between tide and man. The unicorn who loved the sea wept at the cruelty of the two-footed being, and as his salty tears joined the ocean, he became one with the tide. His hooves began to change, his tail thickened into a powerful oar and his mane turned to spray. To the sea! he cried to his fellows, We must go to the sea! and one by one they leapt into the water. The ocean claimed them as its own, and they swam in much the same fashion as they had run together as a herd. So do not cry over the fate of the unicorn or his poor companion. She joined her herd in the sea when her mortal life ended. {As all horses do — surely you've heard the thunder of their hooves in the tide?}And the unicorn who loved the sea lives still, just beyond the shore. And if you believe the old legends, he comes to play in the surf as he once did on land, and will welcome the pure of heart to join his games. |
