"He's over there! Get him!"

The man's voice made Adamantium giggle with glee. It also made him run faster down the alley."Don't let that pest get away!" More voices shouted behind him. Can't catch me! Adam thought to himself, Well, unless I want you to of course. In his rush to flee he ran into a dead end alley, but instead of slowing down he sped up. Faster and faster he ran until he was just inches away from the wall. Too easy. Adam thought, grinning wildly.

His steps got heavier as a metal alloy started to engulf him. His once heated fur became cool and smooth. The flames on the end of his tail extinguished, and his eyes turned an icy blue. His smile faltered slightly as the familiar tinge of pain shot through his spine, his transformation completing. In mere seconds he went from a seemingly normal reborn Popoko, to a completely metal wrecking ball with legs.

CRASH!

The wall stood no chance. It crumbled like blocks as Adam jumped through it like a paper hoop. His pursuers screamed as the rubble fell in front of them. Needless to say, the chase was over.

Humans were such fun creatures! Adam thought, trotting leisurely as his body transformed back to the look of a normal popoko, Just wreck a few pieces of lab equipment and they'll chase you all over the place. They'll never learn will they? Oh well, not much to do now so better head home.

Adamantium wasn't normal. In any sense of the word. At first he thought all Popokos turned into pure metal when they were in danger, as it was a power completely controlled by instinct at first. He would turn metallic whenever he was in danger, and turn back as soon as he calmed down. Though, ever since he ran away from the DNA lab he was brought up in, Adam learned that this was an ability only he possessed. After learning this fact, he began practicing with his unusual trait. Soon enough, he learned to control his transformations without a second thought.

He also learned that if he used it just right to annoy the shop keepers, destroy lab equipment, and stay 3 steps ahead of those people from the DNA lab- his Buddy will never find out about it!

Adamantium made through the alleys until he reached the tall white building. He waited until the coast was clear before sneaking through the small garden, up a rather tall tree, and quietly slipping through the window left cracked open. He slipped as silently as a ghost across the white tiled floor. His nose twitched uncomfortably at the smells of the building, but he tried to ignore it.

Adam jumped unto pure white sheets. White. Everything was white. The walls, the floor, the bed sheets. It was all white. And the color was sickening to him. Everyone said how white was pure and lovely. All Adam knew it as was evil and a sure sign of bad things to come.He moved as slowly as possible towards the head of the bed, trying not to disturb the body resting. Same as yesterday, Buddy was still asleep. All around him machines beeped softly, as if a silent reminder he was only sleeping...for now.

*BEEP*

Adamantium gently pawed at the little boy's face trying to wake him up. He nuzzled his cheeks asking him to get up and play. Begging silently for the child to respond at all. Alas, nothing changed. The boy's cheeks were cold and his eyes remained shut.

*BEEP*

Adamantium curled up beside the boy trying to warm him up. He'll wake up soon. he thought to himself, He'll wake up and say, "Hey, Buddy, Come here!" then pet me and chase me around like he always does. Then we'll leave this horrible place and never come back again!

*BEEP*

Adam closed his eyes, and suddenly he was back in the lab.

The lab he was born and raised in, along with all of the other Experiment pets. He had been groomed daily and his food was served whenever he did good on the tests. Which was often once he got the hang of them. He never had to fend for himself like the stray pets do, so when he finally managed to escape he all but starved to death in the streets. To make it worse, he had never seen rain before. Being a reborn -and thus, a pet born of fire- the drops of water were more pellets of pain.

It left him cold, wet, and miserable with nobody there to offer him shelter...until he met Buddy. The little boy was always nice to him, took him in when it rained and fed him yummy treats. Adam was used to the men in the Lab. They never played with him, or took him on walks. Adam didn't like them, but he liked Buddy.

Buddy was his first human boy; he was very different. He liked to pet Adamantium gently, and tell him he was the best Popoko in the world and always had time to play with him. He taught him how to imagine, and drew pictures of him. Buddy let Adam sleep next to him at night, and he even let him ride on his shoulder or his head when they went out! Buddy even had a basket on his bike Adam could ride in. Adam had decided life couldn't be more fun!

And then....they came.

The people from the lab were looking for him. Adam was unaware of this, or he would have tried to keep a low profile. They had been slowly closing in on him, and finally they came to Buddy's home. Adam and Buddy had been asleep on the couch, completely unaware of the imposing danger...until it was too late.

Everything had happen to fast! The front door slammed open, Buddy started and he and Adam both ended up on the floor. The men wasted no time in trying to grab him, and he still isn't sure how he slipped away the first time. Next thing he knew, he was in Buddy's arms, and the boy was making a beeline for his room. The men were quicker though.

Adam had tumbled to the floor as Buddy was grabbed by the back of his shirt. The popoko managed to get to his feet as Buddy was lifted off his.

"Run buddy! Go get help!" he remembers Buddy screaming towards him. Instead he ran right for the man holding his Buddy and bit his leg. Can't let them hurt Buddy! Can't let them hurt him!" his mind chanted, activating his transformation. The men from the lab cried out in pain as a fully metallic Adamantium used his body as a weapon, slamming into them each like a cannon ball. No mercy.

He had lost Buddy in the tussle, and foolishly believed his dear friend had ran to get help as he instructed him to do earlier. Not thinking about it anymore, he bolted for the door, and disappeared from the men's line of sight.

He'd been horribly wrong. While he had managed to escape them, Buddy hadn't been as lucky. Adam didn't know that when Buddy had in fact ran for help, one of the men followed and hit him over the head with a rather heavy object. The police found him after someone reported hearing what sounded like robbers at Buddy's house. By the time they arrived, the men were long gone.

*BEEP*

Adam took another look at the boy lying in bed breathing softly. Buddy had been sleeping since that day. I didn't protect him...I didn't protect my Buddy. What if he doesn't... Adamantium growled at himself lowly, NO! Buddy will wake up!

*BEEP*

Somebody had to be able to wake Buddy! Someone, somewhere could wake his Buddy up! And until they came, Adam was gonna watch over his Buddy. Those men wouldn't harm him again. They didn't know where Buddy was now. So if Adam had to keep destroying the opposite side of the city to throw them off, he would. Anything to keep them away from the hospital Buddy slept in.

*BEEP*

Adamantium closed his eyes and settled down on the pillow next to his best friend. His sleep would be restless again, but that was okay. He was here for Buddy. Think of how sad he'd be if Adam wasn't there when he woke up...
