He tried to steal my fruit, you see,
And so I bound him in a tree

Spirits may, at times, walk among mortals and converse with them, but one should never forget that they are not like mortals. Their sense of justice is harsh, their judgments final. Beings of spirit have certain rules of conduct amongst themselves, and the ignorance of mortals in breaking them is not seen as an excuse.

A young Wyllop once heard of an enchanted garden hidden deep in the woods, full of fragrant flowers and luscious fruit. Being a curious sort, he decided one day to seek the place out.

Yet magic is an elusive thing, and for days he searched in vain. His supplies were running low, and his enthusiasm had run nearly dry. While at first his journey into the wilds had seemed a splendid adventure, now he wanted nothing more than a hot meal, a long soak in the tub, and a good night's sleep in his own bed.

Unfortunately, he had managed to get himself utterly lost in the forest. He wandered aimlessly, searching for any clue as to which way to go to reach civilization once more. Finally, when it grew dark, he collapsed on the ground, too exhausted to go any further.

He closed his eyes and let sleep take him, paying no heed to where it was he laid.

For the young Wyllop was curled up in the middle of a perfect circle of mushrooms--a fairy ring.

The next morning, when the Wyllop awoke, he gazed in wonder at the lush garden that seemed to have grown around him as he slept. The air was weighted with the fragrance of flowers the Wyllop couldn't identify, and pale butterflies floated lazily from blossom to blossom.

He got to his feet, unsure whether he were truly awake or still dreaming.

His stomach growled, and he decided that he must be awake, and should probably get started on breakfast.

He dug around in his pack and pulled out the only food he had left--some hard crackers and a nigh-unchewable piece of jerky.

Needless to say, neither appealed as breakfast food, but it seemed to be all he had.

That is, until he got a better look at his surroundings.

Clustered together, not too far from where the Wyllop had slept, were several fruit trees. The Wyllop couldn't tell what kind of fruit they bore--it certainly wasn't anything he'd seen before--but his mouth watered for a taste.

He plucked a bright yellow fruit from a low-hanging branch and sank his teeth into it. The fruit was juicy and sweet, utterly ambrosial.

It was the last thing he would ever taste.

The garden's spirit, a being called Tor, saw the Wyllop take the fruit, and she became angry.

Had the Wyllop only asked, Tor gladly would have allowed him to take all he desired. But since he did not ask, the laws of the spirits deemed him a thief, and she punished him as such.

No sooner had he swallowed that first, fatal bite than the Wyllop's body began to shift.

His legs, tail and lower torso were twisted into a tree's trunk, and his upper body turned green, sprouting leaves. On his head grew a golden flower, the exact same shade as the fruit he had taken.

And there he remains to this day, a permanent resident of Tor's garden.

He no longer needs to eat. He could not, if he tried. All his sustenance comes from the sun, rain, and soil.

Over time, he has grown to accept his lot, and while spirits may at times be quick to anger, Tor was not one to hold on to it for very long. As such, she was not unpleasant company.

He who dared to steal Tor's fruit, in time, gained some level of contentment with his lot.

But he is always there to warn the unwary traveller who stumbles upon Tor's garden to never try to take anything without first asking the spirit's permission.
