As she scribbled her name across the top of the page, Maths chuckled. Her father wanted to name her something unusual; her mother was furious. After having raised four boys, she wanted a perfect daughter. What kind of name for a perfect lady would have to do with some school subject? After months of quarreling, Maths' father had finally won: her mother had decided that she could call her daughter Mattie, a slightly more acceptable name.

Mattie sighed. It had been a year since she had been shipped off to the convent to learn how to be a proper lady. All daughters of noble or wealthy families were sent to the nuns. Boys got to choose: go to the palace to become a knight or to the university to be a scholar. Mattie desperately wished she had been born a boy. Learning was her passion, being a lady was not. Her heart ached to learn more about the world around her.

Instead she was taught briefly how to read and write: this class lasted only long enough that the nuns were satisfied the girls' penmanship was flawless and that she could write a love letter. The same went for arithmetic: a quick overview and assurance she could spot a good deal on a fancy dress. Mattie learned about manners, about fashion, about conversing with a rich businessman. She knew which fork to use first, how low her curtsy should be to a foreign dignitary, and how to bat her eyelashes just right to win a man's heart.

The year had dragged on. Mattie sat listlessly in every class. She was a model student, but only because the topics were so easy she could have aced them while she slept. The only class that held any of her interest was history. Girls were expected to be able to converse about any subject, although most of her classmates held the information until the test was over and then reverted to frivolous conversation topics like the weather or who had the prettiest hair.

In her free time, Mattie had taken to wandering the halls of the convent and the connecting monastery. The nuns would eye her suspiciously, but could say nothing to their star student. One day, she came across a gigantic oak door. The handle was inlaid with gold designs and the wood itself was carved with some epic battle scene of years past. Her curiosity was at its peak: what on earth could lie behind this wondrous door? She took a chance and slowly pulled at the handle.

It opened.

Slowly her eyes drifted around the room - wait it wasn't just a room, it was heaven. Books lined every flat surface. The cathedral ceiling was ornate and let just enough sun in to read the plethora of books. Mattie forgot her manners and ran haphazardly to the first shelf she could reach. The titles astounded her: these books weren't just literature (which would have been fine with Mattie) they were about all sorts of scholarly subjects. Science, history, mathematics. Her heart soared and her mind raced. How long had this wonderful haven been hiding from her?

She quickly chose a text that looked interesting, simply titled Mathematics. Her eyes hungrily took in all of the numbers etched across the page and stared incredulously at the letters and symbols that she didn't recognize. The chapter title read "Integration". Mattie read each word lustfully, trying her hardest to understand this wonderful idea.

"I'm not sure I've ever seen someone thinking so hard before, young lady." A male voice boomed from above her.

Mattie's mind raced and her heart threatened to beat itself out of her chest. How could she explain why she was here? She obviously was trespassing or something, perhaps this was some extension of the royal library, forbidden to un-scholarly 12 year olds.

"I-I'm sorry, sir, I didn't mean to look at your books, I was just really interested tha-that's all." Her voice stammered and cracked, she dared not look into the face of her accuser. She expected a slap, maybe some biting words about knowing her place in the world. Instead the man really surprised her.

He laughed.

A deep, booming belly laugh. After he had caught his breath, he exclaimed, "Mathematics, an interesting read?! Besides, this library is open to anyone who wishes to use it. Young lady you are one of the most unique creatures I have ever come across!"

She felt a little bolder. This man was not going to punish her. She finally had the courage to look into his face. It was one of the monks, who studied at the monastery all kinds of subjects. "Well, I think it's interesting but I don't really understand this symbol here..." She pointed to the swirly S that littered the page.

He looked at her critically. "I'll make you a deal, young one. If you can keep up with your classes during the day, I would like to invite you to take lessons from myself and the other scholars here in the evening. You have a great potential in you, I would like to see it fully explored. What would you say?" He winked.

Mattie gasped and tried to catch her breath. This was the chance she had been dreaming of: learning anything these men could teach her. She could read the books that lined the shelves, savoring all their content. She would have something to look forward to during her boring lady lessons. Her heart soared.

"Yes please, sir! I would give everything to spend just an hour in this library, let alone a whole evening!! Thank you so much sir this is the best thing ever!!" She nearly toppled over during her curtsy.

He smiled warmly and led her over to the other monks. Her life was finally beginning.
