I dance in the fires of the wind, the heat of the rivers, the soul of the world.
Drink from my brook, and find that the fire will also consume your soul.
Down by Roe-Deer Brook...
Careen ran swiftly up alongside the river, heading toward its head where a great waterfall fed it. A great gust of wind swirled around the small, yellow-furred pet, showing off the great efforts that went into this race.
Under the clouds, tending a bonfire, Careen spotted his owner and friend, Raeborne. Raeborne's wild red hair flowed down around his back as he poked at the fire.
"Raeborne," Careen called out, his whisper of a voice reaching the man despite the winds.
Raeborne lifted his head, putting a vine-wrapped hand to his eyes in order to shield out the blinding sun. Glancing down at his friend, he asked, "Did you find the source of their distress?"
The two of them had tended this river for ages, naming it Roe-Deer Brook after Raeborne's name's meaning. His name was of old English origin and had been passed down as a title to him.
Roe-Deer Brook was normally a quiet, peacefully bubbling stream of water, but lately, water minions had been flooding the area. Even the saltwater ones who couldn't swim farther upstream were huddling around the river's opening, as if hoping for Raeborne's protection.
Which he offered gladly, but he needed to know what he was up against. Scratching absentmindedly at the scars on his belly, he sat down on a large rock and listened to Careen's report. Careen was a reliable friend who had been with him as long as he could remember; the doppen was quick of wit and full of graceful speed, and was the best friend Raeborne could hope to have at his side.
Careen detailed a vicious black torrent who had been stalking the waters. Everywhere the creature went, all light was blocked from view, and it filled the fish with fear. Many individuals had already gone missing, and the bones left in the torrent's wake left no doubt about what happened to them.
Nodding to himself, Raeborne knew he had to take care of the nightmare lurking out in the ocean. Until he did, the fish would continue to rush into Roe-Deer Brook, and eventually, the stream wouldn't be able to support that much life; it would run out of resources.
Trotting down to the river's opening, spear in hand and Careen at his side, Raeborne knelt and looked for the signs of the torrent. Careen's sources said that it turned the waters black wherever it went, even on the clearest of days. And today, the sun was shining brightly, and the water was crystal clear. Close to the water's edge, he could easily see down to the bottom.
"Boss!" Careen hissed. "Look at the fish. They're fleeing the area."
Sure enough, the fish were attempting to jam into the river's head, getting as close to the freshwater as they could stand. The others were hugging closely to the water's edge, hiding behind rocks and among seaweed.
After a few silent moments, the birds not even daring to call to each other, they noticed a dark movement, and the water turned a dark blue then black. Careen and Raeborne looked to each other, and Careen nodded to indicate that he was ready to do his part.
The doppen was exceedingly fast and could, for small bouts of time, run on water. Stretching out his legs for a brief moment, Careen got a running start and leapt from the land out onto the water. He sprinted directly across the dark water, not bothering to look to see if the torrent had spotted him; that was Raeborne's concern.
And so it was. He readied his spear, and noted the swishes of water circling Careen's position. Finally, a great black head emerged, and the torrent soared through the air, baring nasty, sharp teeth that were ready to crunch to doppen. Until, with a satisfying crunch, Raeborne's spear buried itself into the nightmare's skull. It flopped down uselessly into the water, the life leaving its body as shown by the red blood staining the water.
Careen circled around back to his owner, where he noted that Raeborne was dragging the torrent from the water.
"What are you doing?" he asked, confused by his friend's behavior.
Raeborne didn't bother look up from his task. "Well, we can't leave this corpse here. It'll disturb and haunt these waters. Plus," he yanked his spear out of the torrent's head and turned the previously snarling face toward them, "I want something from it."
Many days later, when the fish finally felt free to roam the oceans and river without fear, at the top of Roe-Deer Brook, a small doppen munched on fish bones while his owner strung together the sharpest teeth that ever existed, creating a belt that showed honor and warded off fear.
