Graveyard Garden
The dilapidated and decaying house matched the rest of the landscape; dreary faded grey paint, and timbers beginning to rot away. This land was different from that of others; dead things still had form and function. The trees that stood tall, devoid of leaves and greenery, still had animals skittering about them, owls on the branches and such. True, the animals had exposed bone and sinew, but they were 'alive' at least in a sense. A dull, strange sun shone, more like a silver moon than bright yellow light in the sky.
To many, the underworld would be a dreary place, and they'd be partially right. However, there was a strange beauty about it, which only some could see.
For a very scant few, they saw how the underworld could be, if it was cared for.
The occupant of the house turned over some new soil in the fresh garden patch, dull river rocks lining the edge of the square planter, which sat next to the faded and peeling white picket fence.Seeds of course wouldn't grow- not normal ones. So, existing plants had to be transplanted carefully into the patch, and sometimes (usually) repaired regularly.
On the shelves in the simple grey garden shed, her gardening tools sat; instead of fertilizer, there was a bit of superglue- the package just as faded and used as the rest of the landscape. Scissors took place of pruning sheers, and small cans of paint indicating why this garden still had color.
It was a futile effort to some, but to her, it was a small way to make things seem a bit more lively. Blues and pinks dotted the existing garden patch- carefully painted onto the dead plants. A few green bushes also sat in their places, each leaf carefully colored and secured.
The underworld wasn't a lonely place, but before going out to explore and see other similar individuals, she wanted to make her home as welcoming as possible. Being dead wasn't too bad- sure, clothes were hard to wear when they snagged on exposed bone, and brushing one's hair was a big no-no. Every brush pulled away a large clump…so that lesson had been learned quickly.
But, she was alive in a sense, and there were others here she could talk to, make friends with, and have a fairly normal continued life. But she missed the colors; therefore her garden was a way to bring them back. Very few natural things did grow in the underworld; two species of bush, five trees, and a single type of pink flower to be exact.
But they were all extremely rare, and since that was the case, they never spread before someone snatched them up, desperate for something alive in the world of the dead. They were magical plants of course, only growing under certain, cared-for conditions, which were nearly nonexistent here.
It was a pity, because all she wanted to do was share the color with others, and maybe make them happier. If she found such a flower or plant, it could be cultivated and spread all over. Maybe that would make life here easier for some. Then, living flowers could replace her flimsy repaired ones, as nice as they were. She put the spade down, a slight smile on her withered features. No, life wasn't too bad here, especially when now she had so much time to try and spread color to it.
As the underworld resident took a break to go inside, she failed to notice the small growth near the garden patch; a few pink buds, and a small tree that was beginning to sprout in the corner of the tilled and cared for yard.
