She had been born into royalty, in a way; indeed, if you went back far enough her family’s lineage could be traced back to the French royal family, but they were only distant relatives though and fairly far off in the line of succession. She was, however nobility and acted as such. There were conventions that she hated about being part of the French ton, but she never actively said that to anyone’s face; after all, according to French society a woman was to be seen and not heard. One of the conventions however that she freely admitted to hating about being part of the French ton is that so many women were expected to cater more to the men that owned them than themselves and she rebelled heavily against this trend.
Her father continuously despaired that she was a wild child and would never change, but the way she saw it her wild partying ways were the product of the society in which she was born.
She refused to marry; in fact, her dream was to become an actress on the stage, but even she knew that dream was a pipe dream and not befitting her station. The stage was for strumpets and women of ill repute and she was neither of those, despite her wild ways. Admittedly, part of her behavior may simply have been because of the way she was brought up; she knew how to read, and when one reads one dreams. In secret she would often steal a look at her father’s newspapers and missives, drinking in the knowledge that in public she could not and her father indulged her, believing that the knowledge that she was so curious to seek was but a fanciful whim of hers that she would soon tire of.
However, Genevieve did have her faults although she was loath to admit them. For instance, she was a moody person and was prone to fits of fury that were often, if not frequently, taken out on her maids and servants. Her mother had died when she was very young so there was a couple servants that she was loathe to be mad at, one of which was her nursemaid who had nursed her and taken care of her ever since her mother had died and her closest maid whose name was Sophie. Sophie had been with her ever since she was a young child and she considered her one of her closest friends and often confided in her some of her deepest and darkest secrets many of which, she was unwilling to tell anyone save for a small china doll named Belle that always sat on her bed.
That doll was a dear precious keepsake to her and she had vowed long ago at the tender age of eight that she would never give it away. It had been a gift from her grandpere, a man who had long since died, but she remembered the words he had stated when he had given Belle to her. He had called the doll Juliet and said in an old gravelly voice, that shook slightly, that, quote:
Genevieve herself was not an only child though she often wished she were. She had three older sisters, one of which had already been married off to a count of some sort. She never did figure out where his lands were or even really what his last name was. She did know that he went by the name of Marcelle, but that was it really and secretly she thought of it being a rather feminine name though she would never say that to his face. The other two sisters were married as well and more often than not she never saw them. Every once in a while they would pop in to visit and bring a round of gifts with them but otherwise they were for the most part absent for a great deal of her life.
You see, the girls had been born at a much earlier time in her father’s life and by the time that the two sisters, who were twins had been 16, young Genevieve had been a mere two years of age. Her eldest sister at that point in time had already been in her twenties and had long since been wed by then.
So Genevieve often did feel like an only child and sometime daydreamed that she was, but she knew that was not to be and for the most part she was content with her life although, she did sometimes hate and love it all at once.
