The Book of the Fallen

bold italic underline

We are the darkest of heart, mind and soul, taking after our God.
We live off nothing, yet everything a man fears in both the night and day.
We fear not even death, for death does not bind us easily.
We are among the foulest of creatures, yet we are far more dangerous than some simpleminded beast.
We carry out the Dark Lord's requests, and we do so with destruction following our heels.
Not even the God's can destroy our insanity, as we are sane in the same instant.
We are the warriors who have lost our true purpose, who have accepted the deal of an insatiable warmonger.
We carry the tail of our Lord, indestructible by all weapons, mortal and God alike.
We cannot return to who we once were, and so we suffer in our misery as it takes form as unbridled fury.
Our power is a gift, yet a curse all the same. We relish in it, yet loathe it all at once.
We are the Seventeen chosen by the Dark Lord Adhikshita.
We are the Fallen.-Book of the Fallen, Entry One

Into the Claws of Mercy

Night had yet to cast its shadow over the sand covered land; the thin stone that dotted the barren earth had begun to cool beneath the feet of the heavy beast that lumbered onward, seemingly lost, yet not. Eyes the color of the glowing lichen along a cave wall, the sun ate away at the slim dragon, wings dragging along the sandstone to become raw, tattered, at their tips, clawed feet just as torn on their soles as blood stained the scales colored a deep russet and the ground below, mesmerizing in the sun as a few lizards froze in place to watch the beast pass by. Eyes were hazed over, brow furrowed in a troubled manner, as if regret ate away at the heart, lips parted as murmurs passed from them every few moments, ramblings of a life no longer the same.

A bird called, the screech waking the dragon from his mind and the long, bony neck lifted the dragon’s head to the skies as they became duller, sunlight fading ever so slowly. “I don’t know, Borast. Tell me, have we made it home?” The voice was a deep, rumbling noise, hoarse from misuse, rasping like a wasp in its dying flight for survival. Blinking, the dragon then looked around him, as if lost, not knowing where he was, eyes filling with fright at the surroundings he had not seen as he dragged himself onward. “Borast…?” He asked quietly, as if his voice would splinter the world around him, filled with panic that had only just begun to well up within his heart. “No… Borast is dead… has been dead for long years, Lefu.” Eyes clenched shut as he whispered severely to himself, jaw clenched as his lips formed in a silent snarl to expose sharp fangs rooted in their gums. “Wake up, Lefu… everyone is long gone.” He told himself sharply as he opened weary eyes, their burgundy dulled once more as a shadow passed over him, larger than a bird in the desert ever could dream to grow.

He looked up again as the flyer drifted away, only to turn about slowly, lazily, and then descend just as gradually as it had moved in the sky. It was not a bird, but another dragon, one he did not distinguish from far off. It landed a great distance away from him, just watching, waiting, as if it wanted him to approach when he was ready. Squinting in the fading light, wings lifting a little as recognition came to him slowly, Lefu frowning as his fear grew once more. “No. You died… I killed you…” He whispered, shaking his head as he fought to shake himself free from the apparition. But once he opened his eyes again, the being still remained where it had landed, scales shining a bright red, a gold plated chest breathing air as the living did.

Tears sprang to his eyes then, dripping to the sandstone beneath his ragged feet, only to become dry soon after as the rock sucked all sources of moisture away, the process repeating as more tears dropped to the stone below. Feet soon drug forward, slowly at first, wings grating against the stone once more, of no use for flight with their bleeding and the bruised and broken ends, soon being picked up just above the ground as his pace increased as much as he could muster. He shuffled as quickly as he could, half limping half trotting toward the gold breasted dragon some distance away. Lefu tripped once, falling to the ground and lay still for a few long moments, but still the red dragon remained rooted to the spot, and so Lefu rose to his stinging feet, the stone cutting into them as he resumed his hurried pace toward the dragon, fearing the image was a mirage and might well vanish before he could reach him. “Infernocs... please, don’t leave me here…” Lefu called out, his voice overcome, forlorn, eyes mixed with anguish, regret, and yet relief. The land continued to grow dim, but the dragon’s scales acted as a beacon of light in the oncoming darkness, Lefu’s eyes reflecting the light that was emitted from the dragon just meters away from him.

And then his strength left him a few feet from the red dragon, body drooping downward toward the harsh earth below him, wheezing through the sobs that shook his frail body from snout to tail, wings flared out on either side of him as he cried out his regrets and offered up apologies to the dragon before him. Gold eyes softened caringly as they watched Lefu, lips forming a smile that told more than words could ever explain to Lefu. “Please, Infernocs, I beg your forgiveness! My mistake was not to side with you and the others, to side with Radnor… I am sorry, so sorry…” His begging made the dragon, which had yet to speak to Lefu, frown and step forward, closing the remaining distance between himself and the brown at his feet.

With one touch from Infernocs’ forepaw, Lefu felt some energy enter into him, allowing him the strength to rise from the ground to stand at his full height, just a bit shy from how tall the red stood. And Infernocs embraced Lefu, gripping him close with one forearm, claws digging into dull brown scales, wings moving to wrap around the weeping dragon consolingly. “It is not my place to forgive, as you have done nothing wrong, Lefu. I have searched the world over for you with the hope that you will accept the offer I gave long ago. But to do so, Lefu, you must forgive yourself, not ask for mine.” Infernocs’ voice, though sounding like that of a god’s echo, was just as soothingly tranquil as it had been when Lefu had first met him, and all other meetings with him.

He opened his eyes and stepped back, jaw clenching shut tightly, all the loneliness he had felt in the years that had passed washing over him like a tidal wave, only to calm slowly as if a storm had passed overhead. “He will not take me, Infernocs, your Sun Lord. My sins cannot be simply forgiven so that I am allowed company with all who followed you.” He was distraught once again, and Infernocs smiled pitifully at the one who felled him. “The Sun Lord is not so callous as to reject one who has endured as you have, my friend. We are waiting for you, Lefu, all who have since departed this life after the end of the Fallen reign. He sees your mind, Lefu, the disease inside that eats away your memories, as do I. Please, say you will join us. The sins you committed as a Fallen will be forgiven in time, my friend, as you come to forgive yourself for them.”

And the russet dragon seemed to fall into himself again, as if the energy granted to him by Infernocs slipped away from his legs. His hind legs fought to bear his body, his middle bowing downward as shaking hips lowered to the stone below him, toes curling in on his torn feet as they ached brutally for relief, tail moving to curl around him as his strength continued to dwindle. His chest rose and fell in rapid succession, as if breathing was too much of a task for him, forelegs trembling as they kept his front half upright, face contorted into one who struggled with his emotions as they toiled through him. Infernocs spoke to him once more, face becoming blank as he watched Lefu’s struggling. “The damage has been done, Lefu, but your struggles and misery have not gone unheard. I have searched for you as the years after the battle stretched ever onward, but I could not find you even with my Lord’s aid. Let your suffering end, my friend, so you may rest in eternity. We are no longer needed in this world, Lefu; the Fallen have done their deed and the stories will remain in the hearts of all to become an example, just as it was intended for us. Lay your head down, Lefu, the self torture you have endured has more than justified your longing for absolution and I am here to offer it freely.”

Lefu cried out once before Infernocs helped ease him to the ground below, lying next to him as his broken body began to slip away from the mortal realms, Infernocs ready to guide him home. “They are waiting for you, Lefu, with open hearts. Radnor has missed you, and wishes your forgiveness for his thoughtlessness at leaving you to wander forever in your misery alone. Calogero wishes to see you at her and Apollon’s side, just as you were as Fallen, and both Rajarshi and Whitehawk wait to welcome you home. Come Lefu, come with me; we are waiting.” Lefu’s eyes slipped half closed as his body became still, Infernocs closing his eyes to mourn his fallen companion, standing long after the moon had risen to saturate the bleak land in white light, his scales glowing as if he had borrowed some power from the sun; whispering under his breath, Infernocs soon looked up and away from the scene before him, spying who he was waiting for.Lefu stood a short distance away from the empty shell that was his body, watching with somber eyes at the broken body that had belonged to him for so long. He noted how unhealthy it looked, how his scales had become as the skin covering his bones, his feet battered beyond aid from even the most capable elven healers, his wings ripped, broken and unfit for flight. And then he looked down at the feet he was standing with, how they were flawless once more; cast his gaze over his wings now strong, the bruising and tearing vanished. How he was complete again, as he had been in his prime before becoming a Fallen many centuries before. He looked up to Infernocs, gaze still solemn before he smiled at the shining dragon gratefully, unafraid of what was to come now. “Thank you, my friend. Take me home, Infernocs? I ache to see my fellow Fallen once more, as they were before he overtook us all.” Lefu asked, and Infernocs smiled amiably before unfolding his wings and lifting himself into the dark sky without a sound, Lefu stepping forward and following into flight readily.
