In the year 600 BC, King Nebuchadnezzar built a massive garden for his beloved wife, Amytis. The Babylonian Hanging Gardens as we know it today required 700,000 men to build and was completed in just 1 year. Despite all the skepticism regarding the existence of such a place, it stands as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. So, what say you? Would you like to hear the real story behind this spectacular garden?King Nebuchadnezzar's wife came from an ancient line of kings known as the Medians. One of the reasons he loved her so much was because of her enchanting beauty. When Amytis was seven years old, she strayed away from her nurse and stumbled upon a deep grove where she heard the sound of something whimpering in the shadows. As she approached the noise, her eyes beheld a lovely little cub. He resembled a baby lion but she knew at once that he was something very special. Beautiful flowers and healthy grass sprung up near him and butterflies fluttered over his head. She took a few steps nearer and his large amethyst pupils turned on her. He seemed to sense that she meant him no harm and rose silently to walk towards her. Amytis gasped in astonishment as the beautiful foliage followed his trail and where ever his paws touched the ground, vibrantly colored flowers burst forth from the soil. She gave her nurse quite a shock later on when she carried the little cub, whom she had named Bundi, back to the palace. From that day forth, Amytis and Bundi were as inseparable as shadows. They grew up together, bounding across the Persian plains and frolicking through meadows of marigold. It was as if spring followed where ever they went. Soon, Bundi had grown into a handsome creature with a mossy green main that was always decked with blossoms and vines. Amytis herself had matured into a lovely young woman. So it was no surprise that when King Nebuchadnezzar beheld Amytis with her flushed cheeks and windswept hair, he fell in love with her instantly. He wooed her to the best of his abilities and soon afterwards, Amytis found herself accepting his proposal. Her one request was that Bundi be allowed to come along with her and keep her company. The King readily agreed to this and in 598 BC, Amytis was crowned Queen of Babylon. However, life in Babylon was very different from Amytis' birthplace. There were strange new people, food that she could not get use to, and worst of all there was no open plans where she could run to feel the wind in her hair. She gave thanks many times that Bundi was with her for if he weren't, she would surely not be able to endure this. She spent much of her time sitting with Bundi on the small patch of grass and foliage that always accompanied him and feeding him sweet lily petals. Her new life was stifling and Amytis began to long for the sweet-smelling air of Persia. Finally, a year after her coronation, Amytis could hardly bear it anymore and voiced her sufferings to her husband. King Nebuchadnezzar was heartbroken to see his wife's pale colorless cheeks drained of spirit and vitality. In 599 BC, he commissioned his artisans to build a massive garden structure within the perimeters of his palace. He had many of Persia's native plants and animals brought in to try and cure Amytis of her homesickness. "Build her an Eden", said the king to his servants. The entire garden was completed a year later and Amytis and Bundi were delighted. But as Amytis grew older, she noticed that Bundi remained the same majestic creature she had brought into Babylon. In 602 BC, Amytis gave birth to a daughter whom she named Imaiya. Sadly, seven years after her marriage, she died during childbirth in 605 BC. Bundi was devastated at the loss and could not comprehend life without his only friend. He laid across her grave for many days and grieved with the King. On the 7th day after her death, the King lead the little princess down to her mother's grave once more but Bundi was nowhere to be seen. In his place was a breathtaking bed of lilac flowers that seemed to sparkle. King Nebuchadnezzar bowed his head in silence and the very next day, he declared that this unique flower be grown all over the palace. To this day, it is known as the Amytis lily. If you look closely, you will see that Bundi has an Amytis on his tail in perpetual commemoration of the Babylonian Queen.
