If you asked her who she was, her reply would be, "A star." The sad truth of it was that as she stood in the dark and dirty part of city late at night, lighting a cigarette and waiting for anybody that might be interested in what she had to offer, she was a disease-ridden nobody.

She paced back and forth along the curve at the edge of the pavement where sidewalk met road and the pavement beneath her feet glittered like diamonds in the light of the street lamps; the remnant shards of broken beer bottles had been there long enough to have been ground into dust that lingered in the concrete unnoticed during the light of day, but fueling her fantasy in the dark of night.

She stomped out her cigarette and leaned into the open passenger window of the car that had stopped in front of her at the corner with an empty smile on her once pretty, but now wasted face.

"You walkin' or workin'?" The shadow-shrouded stranger asked as he shifted nervously in his seat behind the wheel.

She smirked as she spoke, "It ain't work if you enjoy what you do."
