Banished… That is never what any wolf wants to hear… My pack deserted me, left me to die alone in the cold winter of the Arctic. You may ask why I was banished. I’ll tell you. I was born to the alpha male and female of my pack, and not only was I the runt of the litter, I was also blind. My own mother didn’t even want me. Why they didn’t kill me, I’ll never know. Perhaps they just didn’t want my blood on their paws.
I wandered alone, just a pup at the time, trying to live without a pack, without any support or protection from the ever-present threat of predators and scavengers. The blistering cold was unbearable, making every bit of my soft baby fur stand on end. Ice shards and snow would clump in my paws, making them so sore and raw they would bleed. The bitter, Arctic wind made it nearly impossible for me to use my frozen nose to sniff out food or shelter. I was going to die.
It was only by pure chance that I was able to find a den with some fox cubs in it and managed to squeeze my way in. The mother fox took at least a little pity on me and gave me food and shelter. I can remember her earthy scent and the feel of her warm fur when she would huddle against all of us during the roaring blizzards. This luxury, however, only lasted until I was old enough to hunt on my own.
In the time of staying with the foxes, I grew to befriend one of the cubs, whom I have named Aisu, meaning Ice. She would act as my eyes when I was out hunting, telling me where the game where hiding. It was a beautiful friendship. This friendship deepened the day it was time for me to leave the den and begin a life of my own. Aisu decided to come with me and together we roamed over the Arctic, wandering through the cool weather of the spring. This was a welcome relief from the below zero temperatures of the Arctic winter.
Spring soon turned to a hot summer and that became a cool autumn as Aisu and I traveled around the continent, following the pungent scent of the wild caribou. We had picked up many things in our travels, odd trinkets that we kept hoarded away in our many dens and burrows we had made during our travels. Aisu would describe our treasures to me and then tell stories about what they were and what they may have been used for. It was calming to do on the cooler days when we needed rest from our trailing the caribou.
The winter was particularly bad… Aisu and I were cut off from our food supply when a freak blizzard threw us off the scent of the caribou. We huddled together in yet another of our make-shift dens, eating the remains of a scavenged meal. I knew we would have to brave the winter to try and find the caribou again if we were to survive. As soon as the weather cleared, Aisu and I left in our search for our food.
We faced many hardships, such as the deep snow that made us travel at a snails pace. Aisu had to stay on my back so she wouldn’t get lost in the forsaken landscape of white. The roaring winds made it hard for her to be my eyes, and my ears had to stay flat against my course fur to be protected from frostbite. We relied solely on my sense of smell, and even then, it was difficult.
Then one day, the wind blew in our favor, and I caught the sent of the caribou. We were almost starved when we found a feast, a dead caribou that had died in a blizzard. We devoured the blessing, eating as much as we could. The snow and our coats went crimson with the beasts blood. After we had eaten our fill, we stashed the carcass away, just in case… With our bellies full and our bodies rejuvenated, we went off to find the herd, following the thick scent in the air. But we were not the only ones following the caribou.
It took Aisu and I three days to find the heard, but we found it. Aisu told me there were so many caribou it was a sea of tan brown fur as far as the eye could see. We were so happy! However, our rejoicing didn’t last long when my ears twitched and I got down low, my fur bristling. My pack, the one that had forsaken me due to my blindness was there, all of them growling and baring their fangs at me. The alpha male looked at me, then started to circle me. I was furious at my pack, growling at them, my own fangs bared. I wanted to prove to my pack I was not as weak as they thought me to be, so I did the unthinkable… I challenged the Alpha male for dominance over the pack. Aisu squeaked at me, telling me I was crazy for doing such a thing. I shrugged her off and told her to stay hidden. The alpha male laughed at me, calling me foolish. He didn’t want to attack a blind wolf. I could smell him, and leaped at him, getting him to take my challenge seriously. I got my request and our battle began!
The pack had circled around us, giving neither of us a place to run. I relied on my sense of smell and my hearing to take down the big male. We circled each other until he lunged at me, grabbing at my throat with his fangs. I jumped out of the way, trying to feel where he was through the ground. The snow muffled his movements, but I could hear where he was as it crunched under his paws. I attacked him, tearing at his flesh with my fangs. Blood and fur were going everywhere as we attacked, both of us sustaining damage. The battle raged on as we lashed at each other, trying to hit vital organs and arteries. My fur was coated in a layer of blood, a mix of my own and the alpha males. I was fueled by my anger and adrenalin, and finally, I landed the final blow, knocking him to the ground. The alpha male tucked his tail between his legs and whimpered as the rage inside me calmed. I went over to him and licked his nose, a sign to tell him that I was not going to kill him. Aisu jumped onto my back and looked at the pack as they were in shock. They soon accepted the fact that I, the abandoned, blind wolf, was now the leader of the pack that had forsaken me so long ago.
