I was so young when I first met Curtis, a bright eyed boy like myself couldn't help but to wonder at the kind of life he'd lived. I was just being curious, you can't blame me for that; I didn't mean anything by the questions I asked him. But the thing that made Curtis special was that he didn't mind, he just sat back on the park bench and answered anything my little brain could throw at him. I used to love the way his brown, leather like skin would crease on his forehead in thought, while he drummed his wrinkled fingers on the instrument in his lap, and would occasionally run a hand through his curly white hair. I'll still never forget the day I met him.
All through my youth, and even up to my teen years I went to see him. Every Saturday early in the morning I'd wake up, sneak out my window, climb down the big oak tree in my yard and head out to the sidewalk, just like clockwork. I'd scrounge around for hours upon end looking for bottles, anything I could find that was trade worthy. 50 cents usually did the trick, Curtis was always pretty cheap considering all he spent the money on was his next bottle of liquor. But the blues he could play on that dobro of his were priceless! It's hard to believe he's really gone.
My mom called me last week, on Wednesday. They found ol' Curtis dead in his makeshift home he had built by hand out in the southern countryside. He didn't have any family, no relatives to speak of; It's a wonder they found him.
I never did tell him how much he influenced me, never got around to it I guess. I'm not the kind of guy to spill out my feelings like that. But now that he's gone, I wish I did.
