Toby the Turvy

Personality: Hulu is your average bouncy, optimistic 11 year old. She's seen a lot of bad things in her short life but she doesn't let them get her down. Instead, she looks to her idol, The Great Mouse Detective Basil of Baker Street. Using her wits, camera and trusty magnifying glass, she investigates crimes in her search for a man who has the answers she ultimately seeks.

Past: Hulu was born in her grandfather's basement. Her mother, an immature but well-meaning teenager, did her best to raise Hulu on her own, but another quick smile from an eager boy found Hulu abandoned by her mother to be raised by her grandparents. They reluctantly agreed to raise Hulu as their own, which if Hulu's mother is anything to judge by, was not very well. Hulu was mostly ignored, and was left free to do whatever she wanted whenever she wanted. Mostly this led to trouble.

One day, at age 10, Hulu was walking home from school when she stopped by a candy store to buy sweets. She greeted the shop owner before scurrying to the counters to choose which sugar concoctions would be best to stuff her mouth. The bell on the door rang, and a youth in a mask Hulu had never seen before ran to the owner. "Give me the money!" he shouted, and brandished a gun in the owner's face. The owner, an elderly man who had seen too many such youths in this neighborhood stood his ground and refused. Hulu watched in horror as the kid shot the old man before turning his gun on Hulu and shooting towards her as he ran out the back.

Hulu never felt the bullet, just the blood as it ran from her shoulder and pooled on the floor where she lay. The shop owner groaned. She was relieved that he wasn't dead after all, but then he stood up. The groaning increased as he turned to face her. There was a neat hole in his head, a single line a blood dripped from it down the side of his nose. The man, never nimble in life began to stumble to where Hulu was still lying in shock. He had almost reached her when the front shop door flew open. A man stepped through, armed with a flamethrower. "Everybody living, get the heck outta dodge!" he took aim at the shop owner, whose hungry eyes had never left Hulu, and opened fire. There was a horrible shriek as he was consumed by the flames. The man with the flamethrower turned to leave but caught a glimpse of Hulu. He rolled his eyes and picked her up as she passed out.

Later, in the hospital, Hulu learned a strange man had dropped her off and paid for her treatment. He hadn't stayed long, or even given a name, but Hulu knew she had to find him again. She wanted answers, what had happened to the store owner, and how did the man with the flamethrower know how to stop him? She began stalking crime scenes and the dark places of her town, taking pictures and collecting evidence in her hopes to find the mystery man.
