The train to Portsmouth was quiet, so she slept. From there, she took a ferry to France where she boarded another train bound for Paris. In Paris, she transferred to another train. Destination: Monaco. It was the height of the summer season and families were out en masse, visiting the Alps and enjoying the cooler climate. The south of France seemed as good a place as any to lay low for a while.

There were no empty private rooms on board the train so Katharine settled for a room with a fashionable woman and her young, sleeping child. The woman nodded politely to her, and turned back to her book. Katharine smiled back absently, hoping they would get off the train soon and leave the compartment to her.
