It was not so much that Turval came upon an island as that he had a bit of an accident with an island...

The cage was wooden, shabby, the kind that lobstermen used to drag the creatures off the sea floor. A great many of them lay about the shore, empty, some shattered and broken. Only in one of them, a boy crouched, shivering, his eyes downcast. A boy with dark blue skin and gold swirling patterns on his back, curling like waves. He looked up, his face drawn and thin, greasy hair tied up in a knot on the top of his head. His eyes were huge, and black, and full of tears.
