Crossroads

Amary always knew that modeling wouldn't be a part of her life forever. It wasn't her passion, it was a security blanket. Something that had been her life for almost five years, and upon leaving her agency she found herself with no friends outside the industry, and no plan for the change she desperately needed. She had everything, good looks, a successful career that paid her well, a home that she loved, constant company... But something inside her told her that this couldn't be all there was to life.

Her mother had been right when she'd said beauty can only get you so far, but Buddha was always right when he said you cause your own suffering -- and she wasn't about to stick around just because she was too scared not to. Therefore, she did what she always did when her life reached a crossroads, and crucial decisions needed to be made -- she sought out Quinten, who was and had always been her rock, her security blanket, and her closest friend.

But Quin was never an easy man to find. He traveled frequently, never staying in the same place for long, and for months at a time he received no cellular service and contacting him became impossible. And yet every time she needed him, really, desperately needed him, miraculously his voice would answer her and he would be at her side in a matter of days. Amary did not believe in fate, but she did believe that some coincidences were not, in fact, coincidental. And so she picked up the phone and dialed, anxiously drumming her fingers on the dark wood top of her vanity, hoping for a stroke of serendipity.

It rang once...twice...

"We're sorry, you have reached a number that has been disconnected or is no longer in service." Amary closed her eyes and snapped her phone shut, brow furrowing in hopeless exasperation. She was on her own this time. Was she going to live the same hollow, mechanical, stale life that she had been for the past two years? She knew she was worth more than this. She just didn't know how to get out. She sighed and stood from her cushioned vanity stool, drawing closed the curtains of her one bedroom flat on the starry city sky outside. She glanced at her cellphone, still resting on top of the vanity. She couldn't believe he hadn't answered.

There was a loud knock at her door.

She wrapped her satin robe tight around her and walked cautiously to the door, hand resting on the doorknob in trepidation. It was midnight, after all, and she was on the eleventh floor. Who would be seeking her out? Her hand slowly turned the knob, as if of its own accord, and pulled the door open, revealing a face filled with both fatigue and terror. "Quin?" she whispered in astonishment.

"Amary," he pleaded. "You have to help me."
