Da let out a sigh. He wanted to get some work done today, and for that he needed to go to his workshop, past the barn. The barn was only an easier downhill resting point as his woodworking shed was up another hill, away from both the house and the barn. His knees just weren't what they used to be, and it was a difficult task to get around even the house, let alone outside on uneven ground. Stubborn as a bear though, he was determined to get there without any form of help, and to do whatever he wanted each day.
Over the years, he made everything from wooden toys, like building blocks, to animals to furniture. Today he wanted to make something extra special: a cabinet for his daughter. He had visited her recently and he thought it was exactly what her house was missing. Well, he grabbed a snack and said to hell with it, it's time to make his way over.
Once he reached the barn though, his resolve was waning. He wrestled his snack from his pocket, a candy bar, and sat down. His neighbor was a cow farm, and he could watch the cows from where he sat. After a decent rest, he had enough energy to make the rest of the walk.
What a bear of a day.
Finally in his workshop, he drew the cabinet and mapped out where he wanted to add special carving details. He searched through his vast wood pile to find the perfect pieces and started sanding them. Unfortunately most of his energy was gone after that, and he still had to make it back to the house, so he repeated his trek back home, and each day until he finished the piece. Once it was finished, he called his daughter and said he'd bring it down to her, a few states away, but she happily and firmly insisted on driving up to get it, knowing he wouldn't be able to get it into his car, nevermind make the drive.
He didn't mind all the walking at the end of the day though, every afternoon when he returned from the workshop, his wife would be waiting at the back door for him with his favorite cookie and some carrots -- such a strange snack combination was the result of a funny miscommunication the first day he got his hearing aides. It was a ritual they kept up until they couldn't. π€
