Silja was born blind. Usually that is a bad thing, but in Silja's case, it let her grow up innocent and happy.
Her parents were just your everyday person, the neighbour or coworker. They devoted all their time to their beautiful daughter, and she grew up to be a trusting girl with a bright mind and lots of humour.
As she could not watch tv or read a book, Silja found another fun activity. She solved riddles, as these could be read aloud to her and keep her mind busy for hours or days. She had a talent with that, and her parents always called it a gift. Silja could not see the looks they traded right in front of her, and she believed that they were proud of her.

Unfortunately, nothing good ever lasts, does it?
It didn't in this case.
Silja was home alone, when the door bell sounded one day. Trusting as she was, she opened the door and waited with her head tilted in interest. It was a few minutes, until the rough voice of a man sounded: "Um, miss? I'm...I...I'm very sorry." Silja flinched. "It's your parents...they...it's a freak accident. The truck driver suddenly collapsed, and..." Silja drew in a quick breath. "Miss, please. Could you...you can't see," he ended his sentence, shock and horror in his voice. The officer had to have noticed Silja's blank stare. "Oh my god...miss, I'll take you to the hospital."
As Silja walked through the garden at the hospital hours later, she felt a hand on her arm. "Miss?" The voice was silky smooth and female. "I'm so sorry for your loss. Those pesky Summer fairies...they shouldn't be walking on the face of this planet." For the first time since Silja had opened the door, she spoke aloud: "I'm sorry, madam, I think you got the wrong person. I'm here for my...my...parents," she explained, her voice breaking. "No, no," the silky voice answered. "I know who you are, Silja. We...the Winter Folk has been keeping an eye on your family, wanting to protect them. But...these Summers are just too cruel! We could do nothing, it all happened so fast..." The voice was so full of pity and righteous anger that Silja's eyes filled with tears again. "I wish...I wish I could have done something. I'm so helpless..." For the first time in her life, Silja wanted to punish those who had harmed her. She wasn't used to this feeling of loss and abandonment, and her parents wouldn't ever comfort her again. She hadn't done anything wrong; and the feeling little children get, when their favorite shovel is taken by another kid and then used to destroy the pretty sandcastle, overwhelmed her. Why did somebody kill her parents? "I can make you see again. I can help you," the voice offered. "It will only take your word. You shall swear to help me as long as I need you. Then I'll help you." Silja nodded. Obviously, this was a woman who wanted justice, just as Silja herself. "I give my word, m'am."

Of course, if it seems too good to be true, it is.
This was not a case of amazing will to help and give. This was a case of trickery.
Silja opened her eyes and saw the world for the first time. And she saw a lot of things.
She saw that her "rescuer" was the Winter Queen, ruler of air and darkness.
She saw the truth that her parents had never shared: She was no ordinary child, she was a changeling; half Jollin, half Summer fairy. It wasn't hard to tell from pictures that her father wasn't her father.
She saw her golden eyes in pictures, and her icy blue eyes in the mirror.
She saw that she had been tricked.

These days, Silja is serving her Queen as an assassin, emissary and champion of the Winter Court.
Of course, she does one hell of a job. Literally.
