Day 1

As Chief Cartographer on this expedition, I have been plotting suggested routes for our voyage of discovery for the last 7 days. Our Captain is convinced that we will find something special at the end of our journey. We set sail tomorrow at noon. Our crew consists of less than a half dozen sailors, a Captain who likes nothing more than to hear her own voice, a Cook who gets seasick and a Cartographer who's never been on a boat before! And then there's the scientists, three of them; a biologist, a geologist and a botanist...

Day 2

We set sail as planned, a motley crew of misfits, unsure where this adventure will take us. I had expected it to be difficult to mix with the scientists but the botanist, Horticulture, introduced himself immediately with a great wide grin and a strange rustle of seeds coming from his coat as he stretched out his hand. The Captain, Elain-Tao, is loud when its required but there is something strangely familiar about her, something I could swear I had known before...

Day 17

I swear the waves are 15 feet high today, a matter that has not gone unnoticed by our poor chef who, it appears, suffers from chronic sea sickness. At this moment he hangs over the side of the ship, his face ever so slightly green. The scientists appear unmoved by the waves, staying below deck for the most part, although occasionally Horticulture comes to "feel the salt on his face, the wind in his hair and a bit of real nature in the world"...

Day 26

The storm has finally quietened and there's an eerie hush. The scientists are not in the best of tempers today though. Thanley, the biologist, is on deck, muttering to himself. Apparently, he was expecting to have reached somewhere with something new to look at by now. Instead we are surrounded by sea and not much else. The storm has blown us distinctly off course and so tonight I must re-plot our journey, using the stars as guidance.

Day 33

Captain Elain-Tao has been shouting most of the day. She made Abuemi, the geologist, cry earlier. I don't blame her. The Captain's in a foul temper because the storm hit us so hard. A few of her rock samples damaged the deck when we were being tossed about. I think the captain just needed an excuse to yell today. The tension has been palpable lately, impossible to shift away from.

Day 35

Apparently, rum makes everything better. We all started drinking yesterday, the barrels are now empty of alcohol and the atmosphere is decidedly merry. One of the sailors, Aluquin, has started singing the way only sailors can; slightly off key, too loudly and he's not completely sure of the lyrics but he'll give it a damn good go! The Captain has taken Abuemi by the hand and is dancing with her to apologise for the other day. I'm 70% sure we're sailing in circles right now but I don't think anyone has noticed...or cares...

Day 47

Land! Land ho! We have a heading, slightly west of where I was taking us (oops! I reckon I can blame the drifting tides or some rubbish though if the Captain asks)...

Day 51

We have landed on an island unlike any I've seen before. You could hear the scientists cheering earlier as we disembarked. The Captain and her crew are heading in one direction, the scientists in the other. Thanley has asked if I'd like to explore with them. I've decided to attempt to map the island for future explorations and so I have decided to go with them.

Day 54

There is something very strange about this island. It messes with your mind. Something moves from bush to bush, staring at us as we collect samples of bugs and earth...something is definitely not right.

Day 55

There is nothing staring from the bushes, it is the bushes themselves. Horticulture went to collect a few leaves from one of the black bushes nearby and almost lost a finger. The bush fought back, trying to pull things off of him. I don't like this place.

Day 56

Abuemi is missing. She was looking around the caves and there was a scream...we went after her and on the floor there was her bag of rocks and crystals...the scream echoed around, so loud it was as if the rocks themselves were screaming...

Day 58

We wandered the mass of caves and tunnels, trying to find Abuemi. We found no trace of her. We were low on rations but we have found an animals store it seems, meat still warm torn from the bones of some poor creature. And we have found a water supply. The water is cold and fresh, if slightly tinged with a sweet taste.

Day 63

We have not felt well for days. We have decided to travel back towards the ship. I've been feeling dizzy and have a constant pounding headache. Our journey through the caves, through the screaming rocks, has unearthed many new species. Most have been collected for sample. However, one, Subspecies 127QT, seems to have become attached to me. The keening wail it makes at night sounds almost like the cries of the dying...

Day 65

We continue walking, our heads pounding, stopping to vomit occasionally as we soldier on. Everything moves, colours changing in front of our eyes, our skin starting to look like its moving too. Subspecies 127QT wails constantly as we make our way back...

Day 69

The ship is joyous, so close. The sailors are cheering and rejoicing, having found the treasures that they're seeking. Horticulture and Thanley have run on ahead. I'm too tired to run, too tired...Subspecies 127QT has curled up on the floor for a nap...it looks like a good idea...I wish I could sleep...maybe I need more water...I should drink some of the water I collected...

Day 72

My legs no longer work, I'm trying to drag myself to the ship and I'm leaving welts and skin behind...I'm nauseous and can barely breathe. From my position here, I can see the scientists on the ship. They're trying to tell me something. I can't even drink any more, I feel really unwell...The sweetness makes ne want to vomit but I'm dehydrated and need to keep drinking. Maybe if I just take slow sips...

Day 75

Boron...the thing that's making me ill is Boron. The lake we found is contaminated with it. I'm dying because of it. They have thrown a purification system from the ship. But I have drunk too much poisoned water. I have watched as my friends sail away, hoping that I will survive for long enough for the Boron to be flushed out of my system...
