The dust rose and fell in small clouds under her paws as she walked her horse quietly through a small, sleepy town. The windows were dark, and no one was in sight, so she kept walking until she reached the edge of town, and quickly mounted her horse after taking a last look over her shoulder.
"Tsk. Nothing here worth having anyway..." she muttered, and gave her horse a little spur to get him moving along.
Colbie, better known as Colbie 45, or Stone Cold Colbie, was a wanted outlaw. She earned her nickname Colbie 45 for her trademark set of Colt 45 Magnums her father had given her as a child. They had ivory handles with roses carved delicately into them, which her father, who was the Sheriff of Blackridge at the time, had custom made for her. He spent most days teaching her to handle weapons and ride a horse, and at night they would sit around a fire and make up stories to pass the time.
Her father had prepared her for any kind of situation, hoping that one day, she would join his law team and help him keep their sunny, peaceful town in order. One day, however, shortly after celebrating Colbie's 16th birthday, a dark cloud rolled in and cast a long shadow over their land, a shadow in the shape of one of the most dangerous men around, Aldo James Carter. He had no other names, because no one dare speak of him.
He rode into Blackridge with his gang of murderers and thieves, and they holed up in a local whore house for weeks. No one would leave their homes, and no one would dare lift a finger to help those unfortunate enough to get in the way of Aldo or his gang. One man, however, was planning an uprising. Colbie's father had gathered 15 strong, able men from their town, and 5 better known gun slingers from surrounding areas. They were going to march on their own town, and throw out the intruders. However, on the morning of the supposed upheaval, Colbie's father stood alone in the center of the town. The men who were supposed to be helping him had decided against it, but what ever reasons they had meant nothing to Colbie's father, and he stood proud, alone, facing Aldo.
"You're pretty foolish to come here alone," Aldo said. "Why not just walk away? Let us have our fun. We'll leave when we want to."
"You don't belong here," Colbie's father said, in a cold, flat tone.
Aldo stepped forward, showing every ounce of swagger he had. "You don't get to tell me where I belong, law man," he said, and flicked the Sheriff badge pinned to Colbie's father's chest. "In fact, I will tell you where you belong."
Colbie's father, a revered gunslinger himself, whipped his pistol from his gunbelt and fired a shot into Aldo. Unfortunately, Aldo already had a man in position to come up from behind Colbie's father and shoot him in the back of the head, and he fell limp and lifeless to the ground. Aldo staggered back and examined the hole in his own body, which was right in the middle of his stomach.
Colbie ran through the crowd, shrieking at the loss of her father. Aldo stared down at her in disbelief as she looked up at him through angry, tearful eyes. No one had ever looked at him so angrily.
"Who are you?" he asked.
"Colbie. And I'm gonna kill you." Without hesitation, Colbie raised her father's guns to Aldo's face and fired two shots.
He flew back and hit the ground with a loud, sickening thud, but Colbie didn't flinch. She still had the matter of Aldo's gang to deal with. They all stared her down, but none of them dared to make a move. She rose steadily from the ground, her guns trained on the obvious new leader of the gang. He stepped forward and presented himself to her, though his expression easily gave away his fear.
"I want y'all to get out of here, and never, ever come back here again," she said, in the same tone her father had spoken in. "Drop your guns on the ground, get to your horses, and get the hell outta here, now."
The heavy sound of pistols falling into the sand was deafening compared to the stunned silence that filled the town. The gang dispersed, found their horses, and galloped away speedily, never bothering to look over their shoulders.
Colbie looked over the crowd of onlookers, disappointed and severely let down. She knelt by her dead father's side, and ran a hand over his face. She kissed his forehead, and stood up, and cleared her throat.
"I want my father buried on our family's land. I want the finest coffin made up for him, and I want him to be buried with his guns. I'm taking the badge with me."
"But we need a sheriff!" One of the men from his group said.
"You need a sheriff?! He needed you! But you backed out like the yellow-bellied chicken you are. You can get a new badge made. This was my father's," she said, and held up the badge. "This is what he lived by, and died by. None of you deserve to wear it."
"Where are you going?" He asked her.
"Away from here. There is true evil in the world, evil like Aldo James Carter," she said, kicking the corpse of the former feared man. "And I'm not gonna find any of it by sitting around waiting for it to come to me."
For years it seemed, Blackridge was booming with prosperity, because visitors would come from all over just to hear the story of Aldo James Carter's death. Once everyone had heard the story enough, they stopped coming through, and Blackridge was quiet once more. Some think the recounts of her cold demeanor and emotionless departing of Blackridge earned her the nickname Stone Cold Colbie, but others are of the mind that she got that particular nickname from the harsh and unforgiving deaths she brings to those who think they can get away with ruining other people's lives.
