I know it's a horribly clichéd phrase,

It was a warm summer day when they first met. Eight year old Stephie Thompson had gone to the park with her mother and was now waiting in line for ice cream. She felt like a big girl because her mom had let her go get the ice cream all by herself. Once she got to the front of the line, she said the line she had practiced with her mother, "One scoop of chocolate ice cream in a cone, please!" When she was about to walk away with her ice cream she heard a little boy say, "That's no fair! She got chocolate! Why do I have to get vanilla?" A minute later, he was standing in front of her with his hand stretched out for her to shake. "I'm Ben Hayes. Can I have some of your ice cream? My mom's a meanie and won't let me get chocolate!" regarded him carefully and asked tentatively, "...you don't have cooties, do you?" He eagerly shook his head and proudly replied, "I haven't had cooties since first grade!" Nodding, Stephie took his outstretched hand and said, "I'm Stephie, and you can have some of my ice cream, then." Grinning, Ben took the ice cream and licked it. Stephie giggled when he handed it back because he had chocolate all over his chubby cheeks. Saying goodbye, Ben left to join his unhappy mother. She turned to do the same, unaware that this boy would be the love of her life.

One you've heard worded a thousand ways,

Eight years later, Ben stood determined in front of a certain girl's locker at school. It was Valentines Day, and he was finally going to ask out Stephie Thompson, the girl he'd been crushing on for years. He had gotten her a bouquet of roses and a heart shaped box of chocolates, both of which he was currently hiding behind his back. He knew that they were the clichéd choice, but he also knew she'd love them that much more because of it. Ben had known her for eight years, and he was determined to finally tell her how he felt. Lost in his anxious thoughts, Ben almost didn't notice when she appeared and said, "Hey Ben! Happy Valentines Day!" Taking a deep breath, he looked up at her smiling face. Caught by her beauty, as he was every time he saw her, he almost couldn't reply. Hopeful, he cleared his throat and said, "S-Steph, we've been close friends for eight years now. I know that you might not return my feelings, but I want a chance to show you that we could be a perfect couple. I know you better than any other guy ever will, and I still want to learn so much more about you. Please Stephie, will you be my Valentine?" He held out the roses and chocolates to a stunned Stephie. She blinked, and her face suddenly lit up with a smile the made his heart stutter. Throwing her arms around his neck, she whispered in his ear, "I'd love to be your Valentine!"

But for me and you,

Ben had insisted that they go to the beach for their anniversary. It was five years later, and they still made each others hearts race. Stephie hadn't minded because, as she insisted, she'd be happy going anywhere as long as it was with him. Once they got there, Ben had made her wait in the car with a blindfold on. Knowing that he was still willing to go through all of this trouble just to surprise her brought a smile to her face. Finished, he led her out of the car and took off her blindfold. What she saw took her breath away. Ben had set up a beautiful dinner on the beach for them. He had laid out a white blanket and topped it with two table settings, two wine glasses, a bottle of Cabernet (her favorite), some homemade lasagna, two long white candles, and a circle of shells surrounding a closed oyster in the middle. She looked over at him and gave him a kiss full of her love and appreciation. Once they broke apart, they spent the night enjoying the meal, the view, and, most importantly, each other. However, Ben had been acting a bit strange ever since they arrived. Stephie finally looked over to him, found his hand with hers, and asked, "Hun, is there something on your mind? You know you can tell me anything." Ben saw the kindness and affection in her eyes and knew it was time. He took the oyster from the table setting and opened it to reveal an engagement ring. As Stephie's eyes widened with shock, he shifted so he was on one knee and said, "Stephie Thompson, you are the love of my life. You've had my attention since we were eight years old, and I always have been and always will be there for you. Each and every one of your quirks and flaws just make me love you more. I never want to be with anyone else because every other girl pales in comparison to you. Steph, I love you with every fiber of my being. Will you marry me?" She could have sworn her heart stopped. Table settings forgotten, she threw herself at Ben, the distance between them suddenly feeling endless. Her lips crashed on his in a kiss filled with every once of love they had ever felt for each other. Air became a necessity, and Stephie glowed with happiness and adoration as she said, 'Benjamin Hayes, I would love to be your wife!"

It couldn't be more true,

Stephie looked down at the pregnancy test one Sunday morning four years later in disbelief. It was official, she was pregnant. Once she got past the initial shock, an overwhelmingly powerful wave of excitement swept over her. She was pregnant! They were going to be parents! Peeking out of the bathroom, she saw that Ben was still fast asleep, oblivious to the monumentally important discovery that had just taken place. Grinning, she pondered how she was going to tell him. She decided to tell him through a note with some in-bed breakfast. Stephie skipped down the stairs of the house they shared and made three blueberry pancakes, some bacon, a piece of toast with jelly, and a glass of orange juice for Ben. After she added the note, she brought the food upstairs to him and woke him up with a kiss on the lips. Ben smiled sleepily and said, "Morning beautiful. What is all of this for?" She mysteriously replied with, "Oh, you'll see!" Ben shrugged, kissed her again as a show of gratitude, and began eating. It was only once he was finished that he saw the little note. Eying his wife suspiciously, he opened the note and read, "I'm pregnant!" After he reread the two words a dozen times, he slowly looked up to see his wife looking positively ecstatic. Finally, his face broke into a wide grin, and he tackled Stephie to playfully kiss her repeatedly. Once they settled down a bit, he looked over at her lovingly and simply stated, "I am the luckiest man in the world."

And that phrase is,

Forty more years filled with love and laughter flew by. It was hard to believe that they had been together for fifty magnificent years. Their wonderful daughter Grace now had a loving husband and two little boys of her own. Her sons had a habit of making faces that clearly said "that's gross" around their grandparents since age never impacted the degree of love Stephie and Ben had for each other. They decided to go out for dinner at a quaint little restaurant for their fiftieth anniversary because they had a mutual understanding that all they needed was each other to make the night special. After getting a congratulatory phone call from Grace, they headed to the restaurant. Once they were seated, they began to reminisce about the life they'd lead together. Throughout the night, they recalled every special moment from the fateful ice cream meeting to their grandchildren's birthdays. They had kept each other going through the hard times and brightened up each others lives. Stephie and Ben were still as in love as they were the day they said, "I do." After the evening of memories, laughter, and love ended, they got in the car to head home. It was a rather dark night, and there was very little traffic. The light at the cross-section they were waiting at had just turned green, and Ben had made to pass through it when it happened. The truck driver was in a hurry, causing him to drive well over the speed limit, and decided it was safe to ignore the red light up ahead. He hadn't been able to see Ben and Stephie's car until it was too late. The truck struck their car with a lethal force, causing it to flip over. He had hit them on the driver's side of the car, and Stephie wasn't sure if the blood was hers or his or theirs, but she could see the light leaving his eyes. She knew in that moment that neither of them was going to make it. There was too much blood, too much damage. Looking over into the eyes that had always felt like home, she whispered,

"I love you."
