My father was one of Subeta's great scientific minds. He was one of the head researchers on the Genetically Engineered Super Being project, or G.E.S.B for short. The goal was simple: Using the most advance scientific techniques, the team was to create several breeds of superior lifeforms. Perfect super soldiers, perfect geniuses, perfect beauties, and the ultimate goal; a being having not only a perfect form and intellect, but also perfect social instincts. They worked long and hard on the project, but the beings to be born of the G.E.S.B. project were never perfect. They all were born with some physical or neurological defect...often times severe ones. Some had strangely formed limbs or psychotic and violent personalities. Others were born with organ defects that killed them or rendered them invalid. Poor Leo was born with a neurological defect that causes his brain to register most pleasant sensations as unpleasant or even down-right painful, while Pikeral was born freakishly deformed and is constantly wrestling with his very strong animal instincts.

Myself? I'm not a product of the G.E.S.B. project. My father and mother had me in the usual manner, conception via marital relations. I did, however, grow up around those who were. Leo and Pikeral were my closest friends. Not that I didn't have contact with a plethora of normal children my age...I just never quite got along with them. I tried, really, I did, but they more often than not bullied me or just plain ignored me, calling me a "nerd" and a "geek"...not to mention a "looser." But, the G.E.S.B. children (well, those who weren't completely insane) were generally as accepting of me as I was of them. Leo Vance, Razzel and I would often play "Science Lab" together, making fun of my father and the other scientists behind their backs as only children making fun of the adult world can. One time, Dr. Jennings caught us making fun of him and we got a three hour lecture on the importance of respect for one's elders. We were all bored to tears by the end of it...but it also provided us with a wealth of material with which to continue our game.

Pikeral was quite feral the first time we met. We were both four at the time, and he was always snarling and snapping at everyone and everything that came too near. He had been intended to be the all-around perfect being...but his looks and behavior marked him in the eyes of many of the scientists as a terrible failure. I felt unbelievably bad for him, and one day I snuck into his containment room to give him a cookie. When I offered it to him, first he tried to just snatch it from me with his teeth, but I pulled it away and insisted that he use his hands. It took a few tries, but eventually he took it correctly. I continued to sneak in every day for a month straight with cookies or candy or sodas and slowly taught him how to act like a gentleman. The scientists eventually found me out, but even though my father was mad at me for putting myself in such danger, I was actually allowed to continue spending time with Pikeral due largely to the incredible progress we'd made together. Within two years, he was even civilized enough to be allowed to associate with the other G.E.S.B. children during supervised play sessions. In fact, he was the only one of the boys who ever attended my tea parties without having to be bribed with treats.

Eventually, the day came when my friends all had to go off on their own. The project lost its funding and there wasn't much of a choice. The G.E.S.B. children who were evaluated as bearing no threat to society were released to start new lives, and the ones who were counted as real threats were sent to an SAI run facility. We were all teenagers by then, and it was terrible to have to say goodbye to so many dear friends...especially with the way things had been going for me socially in my high school. Boys never looked twice at me, the other girls treated me like a nobody at best and an emotional (and sometimes physical) punching bag at worst. I put on a brave face when we parted, but I cried all night after everyone left. Now, my only friends were my science books and my chemistry set.

Years later, I have, by the strangest chance, been reunited with Leo and Pikeral. I had lost my job as a substitute science teacher because the school board found out I was having my students make chimeras in class. Apparently, that's a "no-no" in our public schools... just like making plastic explosives or turning lead to gold. Really, how are these children to learn anything when the course material is restricted to the bland and basic? Anyway, I was moving out of my apartment and was prepared to make the Trek of Shame back to my parents' house when I stumbled over carrying one of the heavier boxes to the moving van. Before I could hit the pavement, I felt an arm grab me around my waist, allowing me the time to regain my balance, and a familiar voice saying, "Allow me, my Dear. That looks much too heavy for a young lady to carry by herself."

As I tried to explain that I had everything well in hand, the individual who was the source of the voice removed the box from me. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the kind gentleman who had volunteered to help me was none other than Pikeral. After the initial shock, we began telling each other about how our lives had played out since we'd parted. Life had been good to him. He had found a nice home, made many new friends, reunited with Leo...and he was still the same kind and considerate gentleman I remembered him to be. When he heard of my situation, he wouldn't allow me to return home in such a state and insisted that I move in with him. I didn't want to impose, but he reassured me that the house had more than enough room and that his new friends were for the most part incredibly nice.

It almost feels like a return to my childhood here. I am surrounded by unusual people who are more or less accepting of me, and every day I get to spend time with two of my dearest friends. It can only last until I can get on my feet again, however. I can't allow myself to become a burden and between Lirabelle, Rosey, and Chi, I can never seem to get into the bathroom before 9:30 on any given morning. Why must they take so long to groom?
