Last One Standing

Her chest heaved up and down, up and down as she raced through the trees. Her feet smacked against the ground as branches whipped at her face threatening to knock to the ground. Her fingers were gripping a pair of knives dripping with blood. She could hear howling and screams from behind her, but she continued forward terrified of what’d she see if she looked back. Conure would be waiting for her at the cave. She just had to make it there and everything would be okay. Right?

Wrong.

Qwill threw herself into the cave sliding across the dirt floor and slamming into the wall. She gasped for air letting the knives slip from her fingers. The howling and screaming continued passed the cave and she let her eyes slip closed relief washing over her. She sucked in deep breaths trying to lower her heart rate. Slowly, she sat up dusting the dirt from her body as she checked it over looking for wounds she hadn’t felt yet.

Three. She found three gashes across her body. One was on her right arm from shoulder to elbow. It was mostly a superficial cut, but blood still gushed from it. The second was on her leg; a stab wound that went down about two inches, but completely harmless to her. The third was on her lower back from left to right at a slight angle. It wasn't too deep either, but she was beginning to feel the pain from the wounds. She crawled to the edge of the cave and stuck her head out checking for any other players. There were only four left now. Qwill, Conure, Cashmere, and a girl they’d nicknamed Doll-Face.

They were nowhere to be seen, so she climbed to her feet and waded into the lake several yards away. She winced as the water slipped over her wounds cleaning them as carefully as she could. Once they were cleaned, she washed her dirt covered face and maroon colored hair soaking up the sun and relaxing. Then she heard the most heartbreaking scream of her life.

In two seconds flat, Qwill was on her feet and racing toward the cave scooping up her knives as she entered and left in one swift motion. Adrenaline and fear ripped through her as she raced through the trees leaves beating at her as she swept passed. She could hear Doll-Face’s winning cackle as she got closer and closer to where she’d heard the scream come from. Please don’t be Conure. Please don’t be Conure.

When she burst into the clearing, Doll-Face was rolling on the ground clutching her stomach her laughter filling the air. It was hoarse and raspy, but bone chilling nonetheless. It sent shivers up Qwill’s spine her body heaving with every breath she took. Her blue-eyed gaze swept the clearing looking for the person who’d screamed. Her stomach lurched at the sight of Conure lying in a pool of blood his hand wrapped around a bloodied sword. Tears welled in her eyes and she threw herself at Conure landing hard on her knees at his side a screaming of terror ripping from her chest as she looked him over. A huge, deep gash ran across his stomach his intestines hanging out like pink snakes wrapped up in each other. Blood poured from him like water from a watering can. His face was badly beaten as well. Bruises were beginning to appear on his cheeks while his eyes were swelling badly. She pulled him onto her lab brushing his hair and trying not to cry just yet. She couldn’t let him see her tears. Not yet.

”I-I’m sorry,” Conure whispered, his breathing shallow and slow. Qwill could see the blood built up in his mouth when he tried to speak. She shook her head shushing him as she did so. ”Don’t talk. Save your energy,” Qwill replied, her voice catching. This was the end. She could feel it in her bones and no matter how hard she wanted it to not be true, she knew it was. No amount of wishing or hoping would save Conure’s life. She had felt this coming for such a long time, but she didn’t want to believe it. That knot in her stomach had been building since she met Conure the first day of the Hunger Games. It wasn’t until now that it came bursting apart.

”I l-love yo-you, Qwill,” Conure sputtered, blood spattering across Qwill’s face as he spoke. She closed her eyes a couple tears falling down her cheeks. ”You are not going to die! Conure, please. I can’t do this without you! Don’t you die on me, dammnit!” She found herself yelling at him shaking his body as the life finally began to leave him. She didn’t even care if she was crying now. The tears just fell from her eyes as she pressed her face to his chest rocking back and forth. ”Please don’t leave me. I love you.”

Qwill continued to rock him back and forth while she cried into his lifeless chest. She gasped for air, but couldn’t find any. She pulled away from him looking at his swollen and beaten face seeing the smile he would ever make on his lips. She let her head hang back and screamed squeezing Conure tightly as a canon blast went off followed by another. Two. She stopped screaming and lowered her head locating Doll-Face laying dead several feet from Conure her arms wrapped around her stomach and that devilish smirk on her face.

Anger flared through her and she lowered Conure to the ground and stood up. She scooped a knife into her hand and kneeled beside Doll-Face. Slowly she cut the lips off the dead smirking girl throwing them several feet away. She, then, plunged the knife straight into the girl’s heart. That girl deserved a much more painful death, but what she’d done to her would suffice for now. Qwill stood up and walked away blood covering her from head to toe and every little her own.

She lowered herself back to the ground beside Conure pulling him into her lap one last time. She brushed his dark red hair from his face and planted a kiss on his forehead. ”I will never forget you and will always love you,” she whispered, tears slowly falling down her cheeks. She lowered him back to the ground and kissed his lips one last time as the hovercraft came into the clearing. She stood up and stared watching as the claws wrapped themselves around Conure’s broken body taking him away forever.

She resigned to winning this for him. There were only two left now. Cashmere and Qwill. Who would survive: the girl from District 11 or the boy from District 1?
