In the eternal lightlessness of the dangerous Underdark, few races of the realms can thrive in such a hostile environment.

The Drow, the dark elves, are an exception to that. They have adapted perfectly to a life below the surface, becoming experts in survival in their millennia of exile. They serve their dark goddess Lolth, but only to serve themselves. Here, power is desired over all else, and ambition is murder. Chaos is the only law. To those who break the "rules", a painful and humiliating demise is sure to await them.

Yet there are some, like Shi'ndrin Auvryath, who are not content to play the intricate games of intrigue and betrayal of their race. Unlike a houseless rouge or a mercenary for hire, these few and far in-between individuals leave the familiarity of the endless caves to brave the Surface world. The reason for doing so is a varied as the individual; For Shi'n, it was a simple choice between escape and being sacrificed to the Spider Queen.

Shi'ndrin was originally the Firstboy of the house of Auvryath, a powerful family of sorcerers residing in the city of Phaundakulzan and residing on the ruling council. He entertained no thoughts of ever leaving his (relatively, for a male drow) secure life for the blinding rays of the Surface until the attack on his house. The only way for families to rise in the power structure of a city was to eliminate the houses above them, so they may rise up and take their place. The attack of House Despsek upon House Auvryath was a failure; which subsequently caused the Despsek family to be executed as per drow law, for aggression is tolerated only if one does not get caught.

This normally would have been a good thing, with the opposing house crushed and their own position of strength in the city solidifying, but Shi'ndrin's female family members had other plans. Shi'n was inadvertently told that his priestess sisters wished to sacrifice him to Lolth as thanks for their recent victory, and so he did the one thing every drow is taught to- He survived.

Shi'n first fled to the streets of Phaundakulzan, but there are not many options for a houseless male rouge, even if they happen to be an expert spell caster. So then it was either to the tunnels, filled with awaiting death at every turn, or to go to the Surface, where it is only slightly less dangerous. As Phaundakulzan is a part of the larger metropolis conglomerate known as Undrek'Thoz, buying passage to the land of light was a far better choice than going at it alone in the wilds of the Underdark.
