Once, far away in the deepest desert, there lived a young prince who was destined to inherit an ancient kingdom. The endless sands of his realm taught him patience and mystery, his father taught him of war, and his elders shared their wisdom. Soon the day came when he was ready to learn of love. Courtiers spoke of beauty, his father spoke of the gold a dowry would bring, and his mother spoke of the tenderness he would feel, and the elusive nature of the female heart.

And so the young prince left to cross the desert, in search of his bride among the neighboring kingdoms. He met innocent beauties, sensual courtesans and passionate princesses, but none inspired his heart to choose.

The prince turned for home, dejected and despairing. But along the way, he found himself lost in the desert that he thought he knew so well. Soon, his strong legs lost the strength to carry him forward, his proud chest heaved for air, and his sword fell from his firm grasp.
As he lay, his dimming eyes were able to look into the face of the sun;and his heart began to sing

For the sun's face was beautiful enough to light up the world, her rays dazzled with precious gold, and her smile surged through his body like strength. He rose to hold her in his arms, but she eluded him, as his mother said she would, and urged him to follow as she made her timeless voyage across the sky.
And so, in following the sun, the young prince found his kingdom, and returned to his parents with stories of his love.

His parents were dismayed at his passion; for who could love the sun?. They urged him to abandon his desire and search again for a bride. But the prince had given himself utterly to the celestial queen, and refused. Such were the cruel laws of the desert, he was cast out of the kingdom, for a prince without a bride always becomes a king without an heir.

The sun heard his lament and descended for the first time from her heavenly chariot. She held the prince in her warm embrace, and left a fiery kiss across his brow. The prince was transformed so that his hide glinted with gold and his eyes shone with her reflected image.

"Be my king, young prince, and I will give you the world as your kingdom," she whispered.

He agreed, and she crowned him with the same sunbeams that adorned her lovely face. The rose into the sky together, and looked down on the world below. True to her word, the sun had given him all that she looked over. For this reason, all living things cleave to the sun and her lover, and the desert kingdom laments beneath the young prince's fiery gaze.
