Hooved was all the name Hooved knew, and she didn't know where it had come from. It was spelled out in letter tiles on a small metal plate on the door of Hooved's stall, which was small and dark, with no windows save the barred portion of the door. The floor was concrete and half covered with straw. On the inside of the door were two attached buckets, one for water and one for food. Of the straw, water, and food, none were very fresh, or very plentiful, and all were renewed less often than Hooved would have found comfortable.
There were other animals in this place as well. Hooved could smell them and hear them, but she seldom saw them. They voiced their loneliness and their fear, and they reeked of it as well. When Hooved did see other animals, they were being led along the aisle that separated two lines of stalls from each other. Many arrived looking unhappy and unkempt. They were often dirty, emaciated and scarred as well. Some were brought out nicely groomed, and paraded up and down for visitors. Sometimes they left after that, sometimes not. Hooved was never brought out to parade, nor were any of her kind. She understood that she was considered less desirable than the hikeis, devonti and sheetas who she glimpsed through the bars. So she was surprised the day the witch came, and the barred door opened for her at last.
The first unusual happening for Hooved that day was the sound of a strange voice speaking to her from outside her stall. She turned her head to see a wrinkled face with bright eyes peering in at her through the bars, and listened to the roughened voice speaking; the tone commanding, but also kind. The face disappeared, and a while after that, the door to Hooved's stall opened wide, and a man came and put a rope around her neck and led her out into the aisle.
