The bell above the door jingled merrily as Saige’s first customer entered her bakery. “Good morning, what can I get for you?” she asked brightly. Delicious smells wafted around the cozy space. Warmth fogged the glass, making it difficult to see in or out.

“A nice morning bun I think.” The portly man said. He perused the various freshly baked treats resting under the glass case.

“Can I get you anything else?” Saige asked while placing his order into a small pink paper bag.

“Oh no, I’m trying to watch my weight.” He slapped a hand on his generous stomach. Saige leaned over the counter and rested her chin in her hands with her elbows on the counter.

“I never saw anything wrong with a man who has substance.” She said sweetly. He looked at her skeptically. “No really. It shows his worth. Who has the ability to present such a waistline except for the wealthy?”

He rubbed his chin and nodded. “Come to think of it, I was mocked horribly as a child because of my slight stature and gangly limbs.” He said. “Very well, give me one of your meat pies as well. In fact, let me buy one for you too.”

“You’re very kind, but my breakfast is cooking in the back room already. I’m afraid that tasting my shop wares so often has rather spoiled my taste for them.” She said, handing him his full order and storing the coins in her small lockbox.

“That’s a shame.” The man said. “Well, I hope you enjoy your meal as much as I enjoy mine.”

“I’m sure I will. Take care now and do come back.” Saige waved as he left. While there were still no customers, she slipped into the back room and lifted her breakfast from the oven. The scent of freshly cooked meat seasoned with ground cloves made her stomach grumble. There was only time for a few bites before the bell rang again. She brought her small breakfast out into the front room with her and set it down gently on the counter, careful not to let a single crumb fall off the plate.

“Hello Mrs. Pemby, lovely to see you today. Oh, and you’ve brought Callan along as well.” Saige beamed at the small boy who hid behind his mother.

“Good morning Saige, is my order ready?” Mrs. Pemby asked.

“Of course, just let me get it from the back.” Saige hurried from the room to grab the large blue box crammed full of round bread loaves. When she returned, Callen was standing on tip toes at the counter, investigating her breakfast.

“That smells good. Can I have some?” he asked.

“I’m afraid you wouldn’t like it much. The tastes might not agree with your stomach. Perhaps another time I could make a special one just for you.” Saige offered. Callan nodded shyly and followed his mother out the store.

Throughout the day customers flitted in and out. Saige kept herself busy rotating stock and baking fresh pastries. She also propped open one of the window, hoping the savory smells would entice more customers.

It did.

“Good afternoon gentlemen, what can I do for you?” Saige asked. They walked up to the counter, one blushing wildly and the other grinning mischievously.

“I’m here to um, well your see-“

“You see miss,” the second said, interrupting his companion. “My friend here would like to buy a treat for his sweetheart.”

“There are plenty of little treats along the walls. You’re welcome to look around before you purchase.” Saige said. “Let me know if you have any questions.” The blushing man nodded and began to slowly circle the shelves. His friend remained at the counter.

“Poor man, he has no idea how vicious love can be.” He said.

“Oh, how so?” Saige asked.

“That woman could nurture his heart just as easily as she could rip it out and devour it.” He answered.

“That sounds…horrible. Why would anyone want to do that?” Saige asked, mirth twinkling in her eyes though her face remained sympathetic.

“I’m sure you’ll experience it yourself one day, though I’m sure no one would dare to rip out your heart.” He said, smiling broadly.

“I’m sure.” Saige responded politely. They stood silently for a moment until a shuffling and a loud thump drew their attention to the store room behind Saige.

“What was that?” the man asked.

“Probably just my newer ingredients falling over. I must not have stacked them right this morning.” She said, a small scowl on her face. She quickly fixed it back into a smile and headed for the locked door. Saige pushed the key in.

“Do you need help? It sounded heavy.”

“I don’t think you’d understand my...organizing methods.” She said. The man waited, listening to the quiet shuffles and the slight thud that followed. Saige returned with the same cheerful smile. “It was just the flour.” The man nodded and pointed to the pastries on display in the counter.

“Are these all baked fresh?” he asked. Saige nodded. “Maybe I should get something too.” He muttered.

“May I recommend something?”

“Do you think you’d know what I like?” he asked, a small challenge in his voice.

“I’ve gotten very good at matching people up with the right flavor. Just last week I recommended cloves to someone although they’d never heard of that spice. They said they’d never tasted something so good.” Saige said. “You look like a cinnamon man. Try this.” She handed him a small pastry and watched as he bit into it.

“That’s amazing; it’s exactly what I wanted. Give me three more please.” Saige did as asked, a satisfied smile on her face. The other man returned to the counter, several different cookies in his hands.

“I think I’ll take these.”

Saige called for both men to return as they left and closed the bakery for the night. She stepped outside into the chill of the night and wrapped her arms around herself. A scuffling noise drew her eyes to the street where a dirty woman sat on the ground. Saige hurried over and kneeled down.

“What are you doing out here all alone?” she asked.

“Don’t got nowhere else to go.” The woman said.

“Then come with me.” Saige offered.

“Really?”

“Of course. I can’t just leave you out here in the cold, starving and wasting away.” The woman stood and followed Saige away from the street. “Besides, it’s dangerous out here. You never know what kind of person you’ll meet.”

They hurried down the street, eager to be out of the cold. Back at the bakery, a yellow piece of paper taped to the window fluttered in the breeze. A black and white photo of a smiling man was centered at the top of the paper. Under that were a few lines of black print.
