When we were born in the back alley off 5th Avenue, some of the other rats and pigeons said we were a bad omen. Mama just held us close and said we were her jewels. That's why she gave us those names. She said she liked the way gemstones and crystals glittered. All shiny like.

It took us quite a bit longer to learn to walk and use our paws properly. Some snidely said we must be brain damaged, but YOU try organising 4 paws with 3 minds! Talk about learning to communicate effectively! We even tried the alternating days with forepaws thing (we all had learned to walk together by then) but that was a mess as there was always something we'd argue about. Particularly food. Amber loves green vegetables but hates pumpkin, Pearl loves pumpkin but hates greens, and Ruby loves chilli on everything! So as we share a stomach, it can be a wild ride when Ruby gets in charge.

We grew up loving crystals and gems same as Mama. We started to collect some that we could find in the stores we could find a way into at night when the humans were mostly away. Mama loved our collection, although she did worry so when we went on our "adventures". There was one place in particular that had so many shinies that most nights we'd go there just to look at them. To see what was new or what was moved onto display.

Each of us loved to check our own particular valuable gem. But one thing this place had a lot of was diamonds! They glittered with every colour under the rainbow in the light. They always had a light on some in the window, and we had to be careful to not get in the way of the yelling boxes with lights that didn't like us being there. If they started yelling we knew to skedaddle quick smart as it meant humans were on the way! Boy they could make a noise!

The few little chips of gems we've managed to make away with I doubt have been missed. We're little, so we can't carry much, nor is it easy to carry anything heavy through walls and alleys back to our home. It's also weird how amber often isn't in the big rooms with the rubies and pearls. But there's a store downtown that has almost all Amber jewellery, and, of course, it's Ambers favourite place. It's Baltiki or Baltik Amber.... anyway it's a hike and you got to cross at least 4 of the scary lanes! Those lanes have fast rumbly things that would squish us in an instant. Thankfully we usually go down into the sewers to avoid them, but there are some weird things down there too. It's best to not dawdle.

For us, life is good. We love our tiny collection of crystal and gem chips. There are food places nearby that throw out so much food we never have to look far for yummy stuff. Our family grow as we have a secure place that humans never look in. My family accepts us for who we are and we don't talk to those who shun me anyway. We sing and cuddle and dance. Life isn't bad for triplets stuck in one body!
