The ghost
The little girl watched as the bright Saherimos sun began to dip bellow the horizon. A soft breeze swept through the city, cooling the people still in the streets. The girl was tired, it had been a long hard, not to mention hot, day, and a moment to relax to watch the sunset was all it took to make her drowsy. It was a nice spot, leaning against a palm in a quiet place, her crystal Keeto statue, the size of a kitten, sitting in her lap. As her eyelids grew heavy she let them close, curling up slightly she let the drowsiness take over, slipping into a blissful sleep. All the while cradling the small statue tightly in her arms. The chamber she woke up in was definetley not where she had fallen asleep, it was dark and quiet, not a single person to be seen. Sitting up she felt she was weightless, yet so heavy and weak, her eyes were not her own, like staring through a shard of stained glass.I must be dreaming
She felt like she was walking in slow motion, but glided swifly and silently through the city. Confusion grew as she surveyed the area. There were cracks in the tiles and walls and the blue sands had collected everywhere, against the walls, around the pillars, in every possible gap, some entire buildings drowned in sand, as if it had been neglected for hundreds of years. But how? How in a matter of hours could Saherimos become this? And where had everyone gone? From a dream, this was now becoming a nightmare.
But just as panic was about to set in a familar statue apeared in the corner of her eye, her crystal keeto! She had almost forgotten about it, and unlike the rest of Saherimos, it was still whole and untouched. A wide grin stretched accross her face as she walked towards it, and thats when she saw him.
A man, dressed in strange clothes, he had messy blonde hair, a book in his hands and strange lenses covering his eyes, and he was reaching out, about to take the Keeto for himself. Anger struck her, how dare he try to steal from her, how dare he try to touch her precious statue. With all her might she sprinted at the man, the weak, heavy, sensation and the blurriness lifted with every step. As she got closer she readied herself for the attack and screamed at the top of her lungs "THIEF!". He turned his head in alarm, but was too slow, he wouln't get away with this. And with that, the little girl tackled the thief across the room like an angry Bhakoru, and was able to save he precious crystal Keeto. One problem down, nintey nine to go.
-------------
The man sat up, he looked somewhat dazed but she didn't let her guard down, glaring cautiously and holding her Keeto tighly. "Thief..." she muttered."Listen little girl, I'm noth a thief, and you shouldn't be here by yourself-""I wasn't by myself!"She hissed, "there were lots of people here... just a few hours ago..." Her voice faltered and she became anxious, realizing she had shown weakness she decided to turn the conversation back to him "why are you wearing those weird clothes?!"
"I'm not wearing wierd clothes," he retorted, "you're the one-" he stopped mid sentence, his face a look between disbelief and realization. This only made her more worried, like a sneaking suspicion, a nagging thought of hers, might actually be true. After recieving no response she asked a question she didn't really want to know the answer too. "Where is everyone?" He looked at her for a moment and answered "They've been gone for a very long time now. These are the ruins of Saherimos"
She wasn't prepared to believe this, in one night Saherimos turns to this? Unless it wasn't one night...
"N-no" she stuttered, "I've only been asleep for one night! They can't! H-have they? Did I?"
"Probably..."
She got up and looked around anxiously, trying to make sense of the situation. It felt like one night had passed, but it certainly didn't look like it. Maybe he was right? She thought about this, then thought about it more... she tried to recall things about the day before but it was a blur, even her own name seemed to escape her, but something rang out as familiar, sleeping in a chamber slowly filling with sand with each passing day... and then she took off without a hint of a warning. The man called out from behind her but she paid no attention, continuing further on.
------------
The girl made her way through the maze of chambers, somehow she felt herself become heavier, still moving swiftly but like she was not gliding anymore. But what was more odd was the fact that she seemed to know her way around so well, memorised all the ins and outs, all the traps, the puzzles, the barricades, the colapsed chambers everything. Like she had navigated the place a thousand times before. It gave her a thought, that maybe in the time she thought she was sleeping she really had been wandering through the chambers over and over, she did have plenty of time for it.
Unfortunatley the man was not so familiar with the ruins and she had only realised he was still following her after he almost lost a leg in a booby trap. It set off a twinge of guilt and sympathy but it did not stop her. Though really, she could have stopped, perhaps it was pride or denial, she knew she was about to hit a dead end anyway.
Finally they did reach the dead end, a gigantic arch baricaded with sand and broken pillars. "What. is this. place?" Panted the man, he looked tired and struggled for air, it occurred to her that she had ran so far and didn't feel tired at all. The perks of being dead? "Graves." She murrmured, turning her attention to the sand wall. Beyond here was where she was "sleeping". She had to know for sure. Although by now it was begining to sink in.
Walls weren't an issue before, maybe if she thought hard enough she would be able to phase through it? Silly but worth a try? After launching herself at the sand and debris hill she found the answer to the question the hard way, no it was not possible for her to phase through a sand hill. But she did not let that stop her for a second and clawed her way up. "Wait! Don't go up there!" Called the man, he was still panting which tempted her to answer something along the lines of why don't you just pay attention to your own health but that would imply that she cared so she stayed silent. Reaching the top, she squeezed between the sand and the top of the arch, slowly digging her way through. it was lucky she didn't need air.
-------------
It was a lengthy process, and it was hard to tell where she was or how far she had dug, if she had even moved at all. The sand wighed down heavily on her making it even more difficult for her to move, let alone dig. She was about to attempt to turn back when she felt her hand pierce the sandy wall, struggling harder she was able to free her arm, then both, then pull herself out with all her strenght. Finally free she looked around.
Just as she had expected she was in a large chamber, much of it flooded with sand. The chamber was filled with graves, many more than she had thought but there was only one she wanted to see now. Hers.
She walked along the sandy ground doing exactly what she did when navigating the chambers. Pretty much following her gut feeling. But the closer her gut feeling told her she was the more nervous she became. Soon she stopped by the grave that was hers. It seemed so familiar despite the fact she had no memory whatsoever of being inside an actual grave. She wiped the dust off the stone in attempt to find her name but the engravings were worn and unreadable. She watched the grave as she finally allowed the information to sink in. She was dead, so was everyone else she knew, no more friends, no more family, no more home.
------------
It was another tight dig back across the pile od sand and debris, on the grave side it was more of a lump of sand right up to the roof, where it must have colapesd slightly and let all the sand in. She blindly shoved handfull after handfull aside until she again was able to free herself, she slid down the sand hill and sat silently. The man looked almost relieved to see her "So, you're back then." He said, but she didn't answer.
"Err... are you-" He started, but she cut him off.
"I'm dead! So are they!"
"I remember suggesting that."
"But that can't happen! How! What am I supposed to do now?!" Her voice was shaky and eyes welled with tears but she didn't bother to hide it. She was sad, scared and panic was setting in."This is YOUR fault!" She hissed.
"Wha- me? How is this my fault?!"
"I was sleeping just fine until you came along! Now I'm awake and all alone!" Te tears began to roll down her cheeks. ""you did this, now you have to fix it."
Both were quiet, thinking. What she said was harsh and but what else could she say? Many things, but in her own mind that was the truth, one day she was happywith family and friends and now she was here.
"So, how exactly do you expect me to fix this? Build you a time machine?" He said.
"N-no..."
"Then what?"
Not sure how to respond to this she stayed silent. The man mist have realized this new approach wasn't working and tried something else. "My name is Zaccary, or Zac. Whichever one. So. Your name?"
"I don't know."
"But you just went to check."
"...I don't know."
"Uh, well, how about we go back, and then we can think this over. Even come up with a name for you."
She looked at him for a moment, despite his odd, gruff apearance the was something... kind about him. So she nodded.
--------------
Back near the enterance, where she had first seen Zaccary trying to take her Keeto. Warm orange sunlight accompanied by a pleasant breeze seeped into the ruins, but she didn't have time to enjoy it.
"So whats my name then?"
"Er... what?"
"A name! You said we'd come up with one"
Zac though about this for a minute, his eyes scanned around the chambers, though he was looking for some sort of hint. They stopped at the Keeto statue that she was still holding, maybe he was going to give her a name related to it?
"How does Lumitide sound?"
Lumitide? Maybe this naming thing wasn't such a great idea "...Too... long?"
"Ok... what about... Lumi?"
Lumi... Lumi wasn't too bad, it was noce and short, though she wasn't sure how it was related to her crystal Keeto. "Lumi is nice." Said the girl, now Lumi. "But you still haven't fixed my other porblem yet!"
"Well, you haven't told me how"
"You should-" Lumi paused. An idea came to her head, one worth a try. "You should... you have to look after me!"
Zaccary seemed somewhat surprides by this suggestion, "Sorry, but I think its better if we try something else."
"But you started this, and you said you would help..." She whinned, "you even gave me a name!"
Lumi really did want him to say yes, she didn't want to be alone here, and Zac didn't seem like he would make a bad adoptive dad.
"Ok..." sighed Zaccary, "You can come with me."
-------------
And so began Lumi's life in the modern world. She has a facination of the world Zac is from, it was so different and she wanted to explore every inch of it. At the same time she was stubbornly in denial of it, Lumi needed to be constantly occupied but would only play with Saheric dolls and plushies. At first she would settle only for originals found in the ruins, but eventually the replicas tat Zac brought home with him would do. A stubborn little handfull she was, but for the most part, Lumi was a good hearted girl and her and Zaccary got along well.
