His second death was an accident.

Stumbling through the woods, naked and disoriented, Talion hadn't seen the bear until it was right on top of him. He remembered meaty breath on his neck and the shock inducing agony of muscle gored from shoulder. There had been crushing weight from sternum to spine, his ribs buckling beneath the pressure, and a claustrophobia of fur and drool.

By the time his vision had blackened, his skull cracking, Talion had stopped struggling. He died with the taste of blood and bear on his tongue, without the chance to remember a world that had been anything but.

It was one of the kindest ends he would ever meet.

White trees, white ground, white sky.

Snow, Talion realizes, staring up from the flat of his back.

He can't remember anything before waking, not even the syllables of his own name. There's only the snow and sky, the fog of his labored breath, and pain. In his ears, his heart drums a frantic plea.

He doesn't know how long he's been there, dazed and drained, or what put him there. He doesn't know anything.

Agony blossoms into a brand across his shoulder, down his chest, makes him sweat despite the cold.

His blood runs red and hot onto the frost.
